A Videographer Really?

Okay guys, I am still engaged and usually post on the Knottie boards, but I knew you guys would be able to help with this one.

Did you really find that having a videographer was a must at your wedding? Do you watch your wedding video? I have budgeted for one, so that is not the issue, but the more I think about it, I don't know anyone that has actually watched it more than once since they have been married.

TIA for all of the input!!!!

Re: A Videographer Really?

  • Honestly, I think it is a waste of money. I watched my wedding video once, and it was the day after the wedding. And I didn't even watch the whole things, just a few minutes of it because everyone kept telling me something funny my son did and I wanted to see it. Oh and a close friend of the family taped it for free, we didn't hire anybody. I thought about hiring one, but after talking to several people about it, everyone thought it was a waste of money.
  • My MOH brought her camcorder to the wedding and we gave it to my friend's husband to tape for us. It is currently getting converted to DVD, but she said it looked pretty good. That was all I wanted, I didn't need anything fancy for the same reasons pp stated.
  • I did not have a videographer.  I splurged on photography instead.  I do not regret this decision.  Most people that I know have only watched their wedding video once or twice, usually right after the wedding.

However, I would suggest having a friend or family member video the wedding for free.  I did not do this; just one of those last-minute things that got forgotten.  I do regret not having a "free" video of my wedding to watch when I want to.

  • I cannot recommend a videographer highly enough!!!!  We have yet to even order our wedding pictures b/c we are so in love with the video, and were slightly disappointed with the wedding pics.  We have watched the video at least 10 times (to show friends/family, and mostly to watch the funny parts of the reception).

Most importantly, however, is that the video captured our family on film during the best day of our lives (so far).  My DH's grandfather passed away right before our one year anniversary.  Watching him having such a great time at the wedding is PRICELESS.  I'm sure as more of our family passes away, the video will become even more special.  PLEASE consider the investment.

We used Kimberly O'Daniel of Moore Video Productions.  She was AWESOME, and the video is amazing and very well done.  Check out her website.  I think I still have the link in my wedding bio.

  • We also just had a family friend video our ceremony. We've watched it once. I'm glad we had that, but I'm also glad we didn't spend any extra money.

  • I think it depends on what is most important to you.  We had my cousin video tape the wedding and we watched the DVD once afterwards.  It's now put away and I doubt we will watch it again.  I am into photography so that was what was more important to me than the video.  I flip through the pictures every once and a while.  If you don't think you would care much about the video afterwards I say chuck the videographer and have a family friend tape it.  You'll save yourself a couple hundred bucks!
