Photography/Cameras

I am planning on buying a new camera in the next couple of months and I would love to have a more professional quality digital camera. The one I have now is great, but my husband has it with him in Iraq and I doubt it will come back in one piece. I also want to be able to send him pictures while he's gone. Anyway, do you have any recommendations for brands or particular models I should look for? Thanks!

Re: Photography/Cameras

  • I have a Nikon D40 and its great for me. I needed a "starter" camera to start learning about photography and whatnot so I didn't need anything with more bells and whistles. I know that a few girls on the board are really into photography... Kimarino and Sandiegobride07 are the two I can think of off the top of my head...

  • I am a Nikon girl, though a lot of other professional photogs I know shoot with Canons.  I shoot with a Nikon D300, but depending on what you're using the camera for, I don't think you need to go quite this elaborate.

Here are my suggestions for good starter SLR cameras:

As Dani mentioned, the Nikon D40 (or D40x) isn't a bad starter camera.  Nikon also came out with a D60.  Both of these cameras are great starter cameras, but they do have some limitations as far as lens compatability goes.  No big deal, but you will need to make sure any lenses you buy can be used with the 40 or 60.

Canon Rebel XTi.  I've heard this is a fabulous starter camera if you go Canon! http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I1ZWRW?tag=httpwwwbarefo-20&camp=15041&creative=373501&link_code=as3

Keep in mind that lenses are really important!!  You can buy a really nice camera, but if you're buying crappy lenses, your photos will reflect that.  Most starter cameras will come with one lens, so depending on what you buy, if you have any questions about lenses after, just ask & I'll help you if I can.  I've always found the people at any Ritz store pretty helpful with questions I might have.

    Hope that helps and enjoy!!!!

  • santa's bringing us a nikon for christmas.  not a pro photo though, but you know that.  :)  i like the pics it takes.

and i agree w/ you & the camera over seas!  my brother some how got sand in his.  where'd all that sand come from? ha! ha!  he called & asked me to send him a new one.  this deployment he called & needs a new watch.  i love him!

  • Hey there! I'm partial to Canons, I have a Rebel Xti but you can't go wrong with either of hte entry-level SLR's.

Photography is my new addiction and I am already shooting completely in manual now. I took at class through UCSD extension and I learned SOOOO much.  If you love taking pictures with your new camera (whatever you get) I HIGHLY recommend you make it a goal to learn how to shoot in manual.  There's no shame in shooting in auto, but the photos are SO much better and the camera really does live up to its full potential!

Good luck with your search - it's so fun! :)

  • Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate the time all of you took to explain in detail what I should consider when buying a new camera. I'll definitely keep everything you said in mind when I go shopping. I'll let you know which camera I end up with.

Princesskl- I took my first digital camera with me to Iraq in 2006 and by the time I left, most of the screws were missing so I had to physically hold it together while I took pictures and the lenses were destroyed from the sand. I should have put a waterproof case around it to protect it. Stick out tongue

  • I have a Kodak Easy Share, one of the nicer ones and love it. But, i'm still learning the whole photography thing too
  • Everyone does have great suggestion-I also suggest learning how to shoot in manual, or taking a beginner digital SLR (basically, a good step beyond a "point and shoot") class. I just tooka a manual camera class at Palomar CC, and LOVED it!

I just bought a new camera and after doing alot of research, ended up with this baby:

I think it's very similar to the Nikon D40, but a few more megapixels. I love the camera!

  • I have a Nikon D40x.  I like it a lot.  My friend has a Canon 40D and really likes it.

    I find this site helpful.

  • Hey!  I'm a bit late on this, but wanted to chime in.  I'm a Canon girl and shoot with an XTi.  I LOVE it!!!  Though I've heard great things about the Nikon D60 (which, I believe, has replaced the D40).

The ONLY thing I didn't like about the Nikon D40 (and why I didn't buy it) is that it doesn't use CompactFlash Cards.  I had SO many of those lying around that it was just convenient to have a camera that uses them, plus any upgrade you make on either Canon or Nikon will require CompactFlash cards.
