When to mulch??

Hi! I don't usually post here but thought that I could find some good info here. I just bought a home last summer & this will be our first spring with our garden. When should I put down mulch? Do I put it down before or after flowers start coming up? We have alot of lillies, hostas & a few other things that come up every year. Thanks for your help!

Re: When to mulch??

  • It doesn't really matter.  Unless you're planning to put feet of mulch on, they'll still pop up with mulch on top.

Generally, I do it in the spring, when flowers are starting to pop up but that's mostly a function of wanting to get it down before it gets too hot and being pre-occupied with seed starting in early spring.

  • Putting mulch down before the flowers come up can be beneficial because a) it's definitely not as hot, and b) the flowers use extra nutrients and water when they are sprouting and mulch helps keep the soil damp.
