Re: In the public restroom, which to do you go for:

  • Towels because I hate how loud the dryer is and it takes forever. I admit I don't think about the relative "greenness" of them, but I don't really think either is preferable (electricity vs. paper & waste).

  • I'm bad and take the paper towels.

Side note: DH and I went out for a fancy Vday dinner last night and they had little face wash towels (that could be washed and reused) to dry your hands on in the restroom.

  • Dryer.   If they only have paper towels available, I often shake out my hands and then rub them on my jeans.  I hate throwaway paper products, they're on of my biggest pet peeves.

  • It depends on the dryer.  If it's a Dyson Airblade or an Xcelerator I'll use those.  They actually get my hands dry and they don't require standing there, with hot air burning my hands for 2 minutes.

Otherwise I go for paper towels.  If my hands don't get super dry, I break out in rashes that require medication to go away (especially if I forget to take my rings off when washing).  I don't use a whole roll of them or anything, and we don't use them at home except for pet clean-up problems.  So I don't feel as bad about it.

They do this at a lot of fancy places like the Four Seasons and Ritze Carlton.

I much prefer paper towels because the hand dryers never get my hands dry enough and I'm grossed out by touching the door handle in general, but ESPECIALLY if my hands are wet.  I'm pretty eco friendly in general, so I don't feel too bad about using a paper towel here and there.

  • Whether it's true or not, I'm afraid those dryers are blowing nastiness around.  I also hold my breath and leave as fast as possible if someone else is using one around me.  They just gross me out.  I'll use my shirt before I use an air dryer.  My office composts our paper towels; not great on the mfg. side I guess, but at least it's OK on the waste side.

  • Dryer is fine if there is no door on the bathroom.

If I have to open a nasty dirty bathroom door to get out, I want a paper towel.

  • Sad to say, paper towels. I read something once about germs breeding in the dryer, and I can't shake that thought!

Yes!!  I feel the same way.  I always use a paper towel at work b/c we have to pull the door open. I use the paper towel to dry, and then I pull the door open with it and chuck it in the trash can.

Me too. I think moisture breeds germs so I want my hands to be thoroughly dry and normal dryers do not accomplish that in the time I am willing to spend.

    this exactly.

Same here, sort of.  I nearly always use the dryer.  Fortunately, it seems that most places that have a dryer are also either large enough that they don't have a door, or there is enough traffic in and out that I don't have to touch it.  I'm a total germophobe, though, so I'll use paper when I need to touch the door.

To completely dry your hands with a dryer, you really have to rub your hands vigorously and not rely solely on the air.  I turn on the dryer with my elbow or something so that I don't have to touch it.

  • I always use the paper towels. I will never forget when my brother's gf told me that when she was taking a Microbiology class, they learned that the dryers blow around germs so your hands really aren't clean. Gross.
