Projector instead of a tv?

My H is thinking of installing a projector in his 'man room' instead of buying a big tv.  Anyone have one?  Advice?  I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, but it's substantially cheaper than going and buying a nwe 60" flat screen.

If we do this, we are going to be doing some renovating since the home is a new purchase for us, so we figured we'd wire for it when we're doing the renovations.

Another question I have is, if we want to hook up things like our Wii or a DVD player, since the projector is on the ceiling, where do these things go?  I don't really get how this works.  I don't really want to have cords everywhere if we're plugging the Wii into the projector.  Thanks.

Re: Projector instead of a tv?

  • Yes, we have done this before. Much cheaper than a flat screen.

Resolution was great and the ability to adjust the size of the project image was great. e.g. the closer you are to the image, the smaller you will want it to be. So, if you slide the couch back 2 feet, you can make the picture bigger, if that makes sense.

Cords are an issue, as you mentioned. We mounted ours to a wall (not the ceiling) and snaked them down to the baseboard and mounted a little white plastic wire cover on them so they wouldn't be as noticeable.

My buddy that has one on the ceiling snaked the wires to the ceiling and then over to the nearest wall and down. Same thing with the wire cap.

The only drawback to a front projection TV is that you need a very dark room in order to have decent picture quality. That wasn't an issue for us, but it might something to think about.

    Enjoy!

    Hope is not a strategy.
  • My husband had a projector in one of his apartments in college. It was hard for me to watch because the room wasn't very big and the picture was huge in front of you. Kind of like sitting in the front row at the movies... But since you are comparing it to a 60 inch TV, it may be fine. Just make sure you look into how much bulbs cost. They can be expensive and they will keep costing you each time you need to replace them.

A DVD player will have to be hooked up with wires, as for the Wii, you'll have to set the censor in front of you so you can face the projector.

    Good luck!

BTW, My husband is jealous of your husband's 'man room'.

  • We have a projector that we used to use as a TV.  The cables running behind was definitely an issue, since it means you have to point some of the remotes backwards.  However, it also means that you can have the equipment very close to where you're sitting, so it can be more convenient.

Definitely look closely at the resolution.  They're definitely better than they were when we bought ours, but the resolution on ours probably wouldn't be good enough to take advantage of full HD.

Honestly, the biggest issue I had with it was that we had to close the curtains whenever we wanted to watch something, because our apartment was too sunny.

  • a friend of ours has one and mentioned the $150 cost for the bulb whenever it blows out. eeks. no thanks. but that's just us, we spent the extra on a flat screen tv and have enjoyed it greatly.
