We had my sMIL over for a birthday dinner in her honor yesterday. I had told her I'd cook anything she wanted (I LOVE to cook) and she commented that she loves when I do rotisserie chickens on the grill.
My plan was to pick up some organic, local whole chickens at the farm we do our CSA through. But they were out of chickens. My back up plan was the local Whole Foods. I've purchased local, organic chickens from them in the past as well. The closest Whole Foods is near my work, 25 minutes away from home, so I figured I'd swing by the store after work on Friday.
Then Friday came around & I was called out of work unexpectedly because DD (10 months old) was sick at daycare. She was still VERY sick and super fussy on Saturday, so DH & I were a bit preoccupied. Sunday I remembered I still needed chickens for dinner! And we did not have time to do 50 minutes roundtrip to Whole Foods.
DH suggested Shaw's. While they don't have organic, local chickens they do have the Wild Harvest "Natural" brand ones. Sure, not the same but the best we could do under the circumstances. So he went grocery shopping while I cleaned up the house.
Let me just say that is the absolute last time I am done, done, done with purchasing meat products from traditional grocery stores. As I was cleaning the chickens from Shaw's I noticed a bruise on one of 'em. Then I looked closely and, I swear both chickens has bruises all over the backs! What the hell did they do? Kill these poor creatures with baseball bats?
I was absolutely disgusted. I couldn't even eat the chickens when they came off the grill. We've been purchasing our meat from a local farm as we need it. I think we need to go on their meat CSA. I just can't stomach what comes out of the grocery stores anymore. While going vegetarian isn't for us, we've cut down our consumption of meat dramatically. And we strongly believe that the food that nourishes us should be nurtured and treated with respect. Period.
What came out of our local Shaw's market had been treated with anything but respect. Disgusting.
Re: Shaw's Wild Harvest Chickens
Good for you! I completely agree. DH and I went vegetarian for this reason, but of course that isn't for everyone. It's disgusting and abhorrent how animals for consumption are treated. Unfortunately organic meat from the grocery store isn't much better, they're still confined and don't live on pasture like conventional chickens, they just have organic feed. Growth hormones are prohibited in poultry so all those "natural" chicken brands who advertise that are greenwashing. I'm glad you've figured out that the only way to eat meat that was raised as it deserves to be is to get it from a local farm who practices real animal husbandry methods.

That is really gross about the chicken BTW!
I agree. I'm not a really spiritual person, but the idea of putting into my body the product of torture, suffering and misery seems crazy.
I know Wild Harvest is a private-label (ie store chain line), but I still can't help but laugh at this name for chicken. Wild chickens??
