Yet another DSLR question

After seeing the pics that my bff was taking with her DSLR, I'm totally sold.

So, please school me on DSLRs.  I'd like to purchase it from Costco, just cause they have an awesome return policy.  So if you could tell me which one gives me the most bang for my buck, that'd be awesome.

Re: Yet another DSLR question

  • I have a Rebel and love it. I need to look and see the megapix. We got it at Best Buy when they were having a special with extra memory and lens.
  • I have a Canon Rebel XSi and I love it to pieces. Even when shooting in auto mode, the pictures turn out SO much better than a point-and-shoot. It's a step below the D series (such as the 50D), but unless your intentions are to go pro, it's all the camera you'll ever need. The only difference between the Rebel XS and XSi is the XS has reduced MB per image.

The kit comes with an 18-55mm lens, which is somewhat comparable to a point-and-shoot's range (the smaller the mm, the further you can zoom out, the larger the mm, the closer you can zoom in). However, if you want more of a range, some suggestions would be an 28-135mm lens or an 18-200mm lens. I would also highly recommend the 50mm lens. The lens doesn't zoom, but I use this lens the most. It has what's considered a large aperture, which means you can focus, for example, on a person, and the rest of the background will be blurred. It's a very, very pretty effect. I seriously love my camera and you just can't go wrong upgrading!

  • I know you like the return poliicy at Costco but there are probably a LOT of great deals to be found online at places like Buy.com, tigerdirect.com, ritzcamera.com, etc.

I have the Nikon D40 and it's too much camera for ME.  But you know me, I tire of things easily.  It's a basic dslr that came pretty highly recommended.  If you'd like to borrow it for a few weeks to see how you like it, let me know.  You'll just have to bake me chocolate chip cookies in return.  Harrrr.

  • we didn't want something as fancy (or expensive) as a dslr, so we ended up buying the canon sx20 - so far, so good.  this reminds me that I need to play around with it a bit more. :/

  • Also, we bought ours from www.jr.com. They have a 30 day return policy and there was no tax because the store is based in New York.
  • D, do you even use it? You could sell it to APK.

I have the Nikon D40 also. I like it. I don't do anything fancy but its easy to use.

H has decided that he wants the camera and wouldn't let me sell it on Craigslist.  I was ready to be done with it.  Otherwise I would have.

  • There are much better deals to be had than from Costco, check here: http://slickdeals.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9&sort=lastpost&order=desc&icon=38

If I remember correctly, Canon is no longer making the Xsi and is shifting toward the t1/t2 (same camera as the Xsi but can also do HD videos) so you may see some shifting in price over the next few weeks here as the t2 is estimated to come out in March/April.

  • I absolutely love my Rebel XSi.  Be sure to check out Amazon.com as well.  Surprisingly, my DH got mine for a great price on dell.com.
  • I started with a Canon xTi and loooooved it. I think it's got loads of functionality for the relatively cheap price tag.

Whatever you get, I highly recommend buying the body only and then getting a lens based on the type of pictures you'll mostly take (e.g. baby, landscape, flowers, whatever?).
