Need Advice - ASAP!

Hey Everyone.

So, in a somewhat planned/somewhat rash move, I made an appointment at a salon to get my hair cut and styled today.

(It's somewhat planned because finding a salon/stylist was on my 101 in 1001 list and I've been thinking about cutting my hair for about a month. It's somewhat rash because I woke up this morning and decided "Hey, I've got the day off, I'm calling salons people have recommended and seeing who can squeeze me in today!")

I called and got an appointment for 12:30 PST, which is in one hour forty minutes. So, I need advice and I need it quick.

Here's a terrible self portrait I took first thing this morning (really, right after waking up -- please excuse my hideousness):

It's the best picture I could get of where my hair is currently. I'm not exactly sure what I want to do with it. I'm toying with this look:

What do we think? Good, bad, ugly? Any other ideas for me?

(I'm going to try to get my stylist to take a before/after photo so I can show you the results this afternoon)

  • I feel like your hair would be too thick for those bangs, but I definitely like the rest of it!

  • Hmmm. Good call about the thickness issue. Any alternative style options?

  • I really like it, and it looks like you wouldn't have to sacrifice too much of your legnth. You could take the picture along and say that's the look you'd like to acheive, but ask the stylist what changes they'd make so it works with your hair type.
  • I wouldn't go for anything with bangs since you don't typically style your hair. My advice would be to go with some long layers and ask your stylist to teach you how to style it every day to meet the demands of your hectic schedule. It's one thing to see a style in a magazine and love it, but you also have to be realistic about how much time you're willing/able to commit to doing your hair everyday. Are you the type to opt for an extra 15 minutes in bed vs. getting up and doing your hair? If so, and based on your crazy schedule these days, I'm assuming you are -- I'd ask for something that you can get out of the shower, put a little product in, toussle with your fingers, and feel confident that it'll dry into beautiful, easy style.
  • I'm envisioning about 1.5 inches off, a little bit of layerage, and maybe a long sideswept bang?

  • All good calls, everyone.

I've had bangs before -- both choppy and sideswept -- and they've never required much maintenance.

I suppose this is one of the reason I wanted to go to a "real" salon -- so I can ask a stylist and get a consultation. (I've tried at SuperCuts before, but they usually just shrug and say "Whatever you want.")

I'll show you all pictures soon :):):)

But with shorter bottom layers obvs. :)

  • i like the full bangs, i could picture them looking really cute on you.

as far as maintenance goes, i found full bangs to be easier to manage than the side-swept ones. but i tend to have really fussy hair that doesnt take easily to side parts, plus i'm too lazy to commit much time to it. But bangs will require regular trims, so that takes extra time too....

maybe you should bring a few pics ideas to the stylist and get their opinion.

  • I'm just realizing how much we look alike and I also have thick, dark hair.  I have tried bangs and strongly recommend against it.  Long, side swept bangs are a much better option especially if you haven't had bangs before.  They take a lot of getting used to and if you are used to a center (or even a side) part, they can be difficult to retrain to lay the correct way.
