Snacks/desserts ideas?

DH is throwing me a surprise party in two weeks (obviously I know about it given that I am writing this post!) and after dinner he wants to invite our friends back to our apartment to serve after-dinner snacks and drinks.  Since it is my "surprise party", he doesn't want me to help at all, but I am usually the one that does the desserts like cakes and cookies.  What can he prepare that doesn't involve any baking but is still "festive"?  We will probably have about 10 guests.

Re: Snacks/desserts ideas?

  • He could pick up some things at a local bakery -- cookies, cupcakes, etc.

If he wants to make it more homemade, he could rely on break-and-bake cookies, brownie mix, snack mix of M&Ms/peanuts/raisins, pretzel rods dipped in chocolate and rolled in sprinkles.

OR, since you already found out about the party, you could just call it a regular birthday party and contribute your baking skills.  But it sounds like he doesn't want the birthday girl working that day.  :)

  • Ice cream with various toppings (you can make that as gourmet or as child-like as you want).  To keep it posh, I'd do things like fruit compotes, dark chocolate, pistachios, etc.
  • Jell-O makes several 'no bake' desserts including cheesecake and other treats. They're not too bad.

  • Philadelphia makes a pre-made cheesecake filling, and when paired with a store bought graham cracker crust, it is definitely a passable dessert.  Then all he'd have to do is spread.  He could do a couple of them and do variations (like oreo crust and a fudge swirl, or topping bar (do cherries, strawberries, banana cream, whipped cream).

  • I love the sundae bar idea.  Have toppings and coke, root beer, and cream soda to make floats too.

If you want some little munchies I like to pop plain popcorn, melt butter and mix in cayenne pepper salt and garlic powder.  Pour over the popcorn and add some honey roasted nuts.  Simple and tasty.

  • LOVE the sundae bar idea, and also love the root beer/coke/cream soda idea for floats.  He could do a sundae bar and then have some crackers with purchased dips, popcorn, pretzels, those frozen appetizers for savory snacks.

    Yes This

  • we had a sundae party for my sister uncle and cousisns birthday, just went to the bulk bins and bought little amounts of different candies nuts sprinkls etc, it was way cheaper to buy just a bit in the bulk bins than buying canisters from the icecream topping aisle, we used a candle-warming fondue pot for fudge. dont for get whipped cream crushed pineapple and bananas and marachino cherries! waffle bowls are great too!

its easy prep and clean-up, just use disposable bowls for the toppings, or get a pack of tiny gladware bowls, put the toppings in them ahead of time and just remove the lids at party time and relid after!

whatever you do, happy bday and have fun, ur not allowed to work on ur special day!

  • If you do the sundae bar a tip: I bought a big tub of vanilla ice cream and prescooped them into the little clear plastic cups.  Then I covered with the press and seal.  No fussing at the party and easy clean up.

Since it's also girl scout cookie time you could grab a box of thin mints and samoas and crunch them up for toppings.
