Possibly relocating to NW indiana
DH is looking at a job in Munster .... I'm not familiar with the area, and wanted to get some tips on where to live/where not to live in the area ... We're newly married (Feb.), no kids and would want easy access to restaurants/shopping. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
TIA!
Re: Possibly relocating to NW indiana
My Mom's family is from there and my grandmother lives there. Columbia Avenue in Munster is a good area with access to a lot of different things. Do not confuse it with Columbia Avenue in Hammond. Munster is nice all around since it is still a young town (only about 40 years since it developed). Ridge Road is nice too for access. My grandmother lived across from the hospital and High School for most of my life. That was a really nice neighborhood and convenient to the high school for fireworks, the hospital, churches, shopping, and the community center.
Hammond and Gary are not good. There is almost nothing nice left in either of those places. Griffith is going to be hit or miss. There is a lot of damage there right now since they just had a tornado.
Merrillville and Shererville are going to be nice too. Almost anything off of 30 in Merrillville is convenient. There is a lot of shopping and Star Plaza gets comedians and concerts. It's not too far of a drive to get to the beach on Lake Michigan in Michigan City or the Michigan side of the Lake Michigan coast for a day trip. The Michigan side has tons of great little restaurants and art galleries if you want out of that area. It is where my husband and I are from. We miss it a lot.
That should give you some cities to look up on realtor.com to get an idea about housing in the area. The areas tend to blend a little bit when you are house hunting.
If you haven't figured it out yet, NW Indiana is an interesting place. It's got really high population density and a pp said, one town tends to run into the next city which runs into the next town, etc. Many of the cities and towns are really at their max and couldn't annex anymore if they wanted to. I do some work up there and I still have a hard time keeping all the communities staight. (but I know better than to mix them up... oh, the residents get pretty testy about that!) I don't know where Crown Point, Portage and Valparaiso are in relation to Munster, but I get a really good vibe from those communities when I'm up there for work.
Thanks girls! that gives me a few ideas of where to look (and not look!)
I appreciate the help
Valporaiso is the farthest mentioned. It's a nice area. As PP recommended, Munster, Crown Point, Scherrilville, Chesterton, Merrilville are all good. Stay away from Hammond and Gary Indiana. I am from Calumet City IL which borders Lansing IL and Hammond IN. I have heard Lansing is going down hill.
I guess it depends on the kind of area you are looking for. Do you want to be close to farmland? If so than Chesterton and Valporaiso are good choices. They are near the beaches and the Southshore train as well. The further out you go the more you will get for your money. My Mom has been a realtor in the area since 1993.
You can find me on the Baltimore board if I can be of more help.

I use to live in Hammond, so I get offended when people talk bad about it. I still work in Hammond at the YMCA. It has gone down hill in the past few years, but there are areas that are nicer. The nicest area will be closer to Purdue. Do stay away from Gary. Bad, bad bad area.
Crown Point is nice, Munster, Scherrillville, Chesterton are nice. Be careful with Merrillville, it boards Gary.
I live in Crown Point and LOVE IT. I am a gated community called Lakes of the Four Seasons. There are 10,000 people in our community. we have our own security, club house, gold course, beaches, parks, it will be a great place to raise a family.
PS I am excited to know of another NWI nestie.
