Any tips on growing my own herb garden?
I already have three small pots ready to go for an herb garden and I just need to purchase the soil and the seeds. Any tips on growing my first herb garden? I am hoping to grow chives, basil, and parsley... since I use these three the most. Any tips are appreciated!
Re: Any tips on growing my own herb garden?
I also bought plants last year rather than starting them from seed. I do start veggies from seed though. Last year I did oregano, thyme, rosemary, cilantro, and mint. I didn't do basil and don't plant on doing it this year since it's very cheap from the farmer's market, usually $2 for a huge bunch.
All the herb plants need is a very sunny location and frequent watering. In the summer, I watered them almost every day. They should grow like crazy. Take a bit of the plant at a time for recipes, I'd say no more than a third, to encourage new growth. If you want to make pesto out of the basil, which necessitates taking the whole plant, sow seeds every 2-3 weeks for a continous harvest. If they start to flower pinch the flowers. Once they've tried to flower for a few weeks it's time to harvest everything. I cut them into bunches, tied each bunch up and hung it in my pantry for 2-3 weeks to dry. Then I stripped the leaves and put them into shaker jars from BB&B. Voila, homegrown organic herbs year-round.
After this first batch I figured out the drying works just as well without the paper bags so I stopped using them.
