Child care question in Hampton Roads

Hi.  I'm new.  Well, I was on the knot back in the day, but I'm new to the nest.

Anyway, my husband and I are planning to TTC at the end of the year, but hope to buy a house in Nofolk this summer.  In calculating our house budget, we need to consider child care costs.

Does anyone know any good resources I can use to research this?

Re: Child care question in Hampton Roads

  • I would ask friends/family/neighbors/co-workers who have children.  Each family is different when it comes to childcare.  Some have family/neighbors watch their kids for little to no money.  Some drop them off at a church daycare.  Some drop them off at a more pricey daycare. It's going to be a significant chunk of your budget.  When you interview people with children you'll have a baseline to go on.
  • I wish I could do that, but none of our friends have children, and my husband's co-workers' wives either stay home with their kids, or their kids are older and not in child care any more.  My neighbors don't have kids either.  I can't ask coworkers because plans to procreate isn't exactly something I want to advertise at work. :)

     *sigh*  I'm so difficult!

  • I'm not sure what prices are around there, but most child-care facilities here in the Petersburg/Tri-City area are at least $150 a week (I want to go back to work full-time after baby #2 is born so I have been looking into it).  I have not checked in-home childcare prices yet.

I suggest calling a few places to find out what they charge.  Also make sure to ask what ages they provide care for.  Some daycares don't accept anyone under the age of 1 or 2, and some go as young as 1 month.

You should check out the Virginia Social Services website.  I found it helpful in narrowing down which facilities that I would like to visit and ask more questions.  They have a search by location function, and you can find licensed daycares (facilities, in home, and/or short term) in your area.  Not only does it provide the days/hours, ages that they provide care, and phone numbers, but it also lists every inspection in the past couple years that have been performed and the nature of violations (if any) that they come across.

  • DH's coworker is looking at $700/month in newport news and that includes a small discount b/c of their employer.

ETA: That's at a center and their little one will be about 6 weeks when she starts.

  • In talking with friends in VB area, home based child care places cost between 120 and 180 a week and centers about 1000-1500 a month.

    I hope that helps!

  • Thanks ladies!

I'll definitely check out that link.
