Tempo - Waltham

I'm thinking of checking out this bistro tomorrow night with a few co-workers.  Yelp seems to have great reviews.  Anyone try it?

Re: Tempo - Waltham

  • I've actually never been and I live in Waltham.  Hmm, will have to add it to my list.

Let us know how you like it.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I live in Waltham too and it's actually one of my husband's favorite places to go in "The Ham"! I don't love it so much. I think it's REALLY overpriced for Waltham. Having said that, the drinks are fun and it's a great place to hang with the girls. The appetizers are amazing and the dinner is decent. If you don't want a ton of food, order a bunch of apps and they will be really good!

Hmm...wondering if we should do a GTG here?  We Waltham ladies could have our hubbies pick us up afterwards so we can have as many of those fun drinks as possible :)

I would love to have a GTG so I can meet everyone! :-)

  • Sounds good to me!

I live in Waltham too and I thought we hit all the Moody St. restaurants.  Excited to try something new in the area.

My GTG with co-workers got pushed back to next week.  I'll be sure to let you know how we like it.  The menu looks good.  I agree a bit pricey, but a nice change with the menu options.

  • I live in Waltham as well (about a mile away from Tempo, actually..) and we go all the time. We've decided that the apps are way better than the entrees...we're always kind of disappointed by the entrees. They do have GREAT drinks and apps though.

The service is a little spotty. We've been about 8-10 times and I'd say more than half of the times our waitress has been either rude or absent or both. It's not a great track record, but it's close to home and a better choice than the Skellig :o)

  • Firefly, have you tried Ponzu?  I'm not usually a fan of pan-Asian restaurants (they try to do too many cuisines and as a result aren't good at any of them), but I've been pleasantly surprised by Ponzu.  Food and service are both good, and the prices are reasonable.

  • We've only tried Ponzu once and it was takeout sushi..and we decided that if we were going to do takeout sushi, we preferred Sato and if we're going out for sushi, we LOVE LOVE LOVE All Seasons in Malden (it's so weird that this awesome sushi place is in Malden of all places, but it's really great!...and it's owned by the co-owner of Sato).

We'll have to give Ponzu another shot. It's good to hear that it's yummy!

  • Agreed, if I'm going to get sushi I want it from a sushi restaurant.  Except that Ponzu has a great torched himachi--just torched enough, not cooking the fish like I've had at other places.  The hot ribs and some of the noodle dishes are also really good.

You know what's better than Sato?  Daikanyama in Lexington.  We stopped going to Sato after finding this place.  It might be a little longer drive for you if you live right near Moody St. but it's worth it.

I've been to All Seasons and you're right, it's surprisingly good!  I don't think I've had the sushi, but it's definitely weird having such a nicely appointed restaurant in the middle of Malden Square!  I didn't know that it's owned by one of the Sato folks.

My review is just about this although Firefly is a little too nice I think.  I have tried to like this place and probably went about 5-6 times before I vowed never to go again.  I have been served bad fish, was told "that's how salmon is supposed to taste".  I eat salmon all of the time. I know if it's REALLY fishy, it's bad.  They did  make me something else that came out by the time DH was finished with his entree and it was some kind of fish with canned mushrooms on top (gross)...and they didn't even offer a discount on our meal.  We then tried the last time to go the bar/apps route and I was astounded by how rude/crude the bartender was.  I could barely stand to sit at the bar and listen to him yap.  For the prices you pay in that place, you could go out for a really good dinner at Il Capriccio or even La Campania.  It is totally not worth it...even for the drinks.

However, I would LOVE to do a GTG in Waltham.  It seems like a lot of us live here.  I might suggest something besides Tempo though.

  • oops.  sorry for the duplicate post!

ooh..thanks for the recommendation, we'll have to check out the Lexington place, thanks!

When we go to All Seasons we always mean to try something else, but the sushi is just too good to pass up..I mean, we drove ALL THE WAY to Malden :op However, we did try a mussels appetizer that was totally amazing..So I'm sure their non-sushi food is also great!

Alrighty then, sounds like Tempo is OUT for a GTG location, LOL!  Seriously, I hate bad service, especially if you're paying for a better experience.  But it does sound like a Waltham GTG is in order, so maybe I'll start another post about it.
