Hockey game question

DH is going to take DD to a hockey game at RPI on Friday - it's like a family day thing that his MBA class is doing (pizza party and hockey game).

Neither of us have ever been to a hockey game.. can you guys give me any tips?  like to make sure they have a good time?

Is it going to be cold - how cold?  Should I make sure my DD is bundled up?  Or should I bring a sweatshirt for her so that she is warm but not cooking in her jacket?

Do they have food at games - like what, and is it crazy overpriced?

What would the seats be like?  (cold, hard?)

Is it going to be super loud?  (again, for DD)

I'm thinking it's not the most exciting thing for a toddler but I'm trying to maximize her having some fun even if they leave after just a little bit.  Anything else you can think of would be great!

Re: Hockey game question

  • I've never been to RPI but I've spent a lot of time in hockey rinks of all sizes since DH played in college and men's league and we've gone to a ton of Sabres games.  I took DS for his first rink experience to a Sabres game at HSBC arena and it was cold.  He was bundled up in a onesie and a sweater underneath his winter jacket.  He wore just jeans, socks and shoes.  There was no need for a hat.  Since there was no place for him to run around, he sat on our lap the entire time.  We stayed for halfway into the third period so that was like an hour and a half.  We were also afraid that it was going to be terribly loud especially when they scored but I'd try to cover up his ears if it looked like they were near the net getting ready to score.

We took him to his first men's league game two weeks ago and it was at a rink where high school games and tournaments are held and it was so much colder than HSBC arena.  Again he was bundled up in two layers along with his winter jacket.  This time he wore a hat and mittens but they didn't stay on since he was able to run around.  He learned fast how to be a rink rat.

Depending on the venue, especially for an NHL or AHL game, there will be food and drinks.  And yes they will be overpriced.  If it's a smaller venue, they may have a snack bar that is reasonable.  The seats will be cold and hard no matter the venue.  :-(

  • I have taken my DS to an NHL game.  It wasn't too noisy for him.  I did cover his ears during a big goal.

It shouldn't be too cold but def dress her warmly.  I think her jacket is appropriate with long sleeved shirt underneath, they can always undo it if she gets too hot.

The seats will not be comfortable :)

Food will be available but it will be junky same with drinks and not toddler friendly think popcorn/peanuts/candy but there would probably be hotdogs/pizza by the slice or burgers too.  I would pack her a little something for herself.  No one should care if a toddler is bringing in a juicebox and some crackers and maybe a treat you know she likes for your H to surprise her with if she starts to get bored.

  • I have never been to a college game before but a lot of things are the same.

Yes, it will be chilly.  I'm assuming DH is taking your older DD so I would dress her in jeans and a sweater.  Maybe a long sleeve T-Shirt underneath and she can take the sweater off if she gets too warm.

Not too sure about food at a college game, but I can't imagine that it would be ridiculously overpriced.  I'm sure your DH can sneak some snacks in for her (I take my own water and trail mix to our AHL games).

The seats will peobably be either bleachers or the hard plastic seats.

The crowd/music might be loud at times but shouldn't be unbearable.

Have your DH take something for DD to do while she is there in case she gets bored (coloring books, a doll, etc.)

I'm sure they will have a blast!

  • I've been to RPI and it's a little chilly but not really coat worthy.  A sweater should be fine.  There's food there to buy but mostly snacky type stuff, popcorn, hot dogs, etc.  It's not Yankee Stadium prices but I'm sure it's not very cheap either.  The only loud thing I remember is the horn to signal the end of the period.  It's been a while since I went but it was fun and there were lots of kids there at the game.
