*MyNameHere*

I was BF'ing in the Mother's Room at BRU when I was on Long Island yesterday. ?There was a young-ish looking Grandmother bottle feeding her daughter's 4-week-old. ?She kept looking over at me, kind of in a weird way. Almost like she was annoyed by my BF- well, hello, I am in the MOTHER'S ROOM!

Finally, with clear disdain in her voice, she says, "So, how long are you gonna do that for?" ?And I was so caught off guard that I just said, "Do what?" ?She said, "You know, the breastfeeding. Not too many people do that anymore when you have the convenience of bottle feeding. ?Wouldn't it just be easier to give that baby a bottle? ?I mean he looks big enough to me!"?

First off, yeah, he is big, but he's only 7 1/2 months, so give me a break! I was trying SOOOOO hard to remember what it was you said you told people when they asked when you were going to stop BF'ing ?(I remember now- "yesterday"). ?But I couldn't remember it and I thought my quick wit would fail me, until I said, "Well, I think I'll be breastfeeding at least until he goes to college. ?By that time, he should be able to go straight to a sippy cup." ?She looked a little taken aback as I packed up to go. ?Then Ben started making his "bear" noises at her and let's just say I don't think she was sad to see us go... : )

It didn't bother me, just caught me off guard and I am really not that surprised anymore by the weird things people say or think they have a right to say to you when you have a baby. ?Just weird!?

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that I thought of you and you inspired me to reach in and give her a little sarcasm! ? : ?)?

  • Unbelievable!!!! I am astonished at how ignorant and RUDE people are!!!! Your comment was really quick witted and sarcastic, but I totally would have put her in her place and said something along the lines of "Anyone who knows anything about babies knows that breast milk is best, and I happen to have my child's best interest at heart, so I'm going to do this as long as he and I are both able and willing, be it 7.5 months like he is now, or 17.5 months".

    What a jerk.

  • omg i would never ever ever say anything to anyone bfing their kid! what an ass!!!!

  • That's pretty funny. BF was not very popular out for our parents' generation so a lot of people that age have a hard time accepting it. My Mom used to make somewhat negative comments about it but I think all the positive news stories about how good it is are starting to make a difference and I wouldn't be surprised if one day she starts saying how great it was that her granddaughter was BF for so long;)

I can just see formula feeding will come back into style when we are older and our generation will be saying "What? You quit BF already?" instead of the ever-popular "Are you STILL BF that baby!"

  • Jeanette what an a hole person, and at BRU!!  In the Mother's room!!

I know the older generations don't really understand, even my mom the other day said something along the lines of it coming to the end cuz of his teeth. Actually he has never tried to bite me, but he is all about pinching my arm while he nurses - now that hurts!
