external hard drive

Hi I thought I would pick your brains. I need an external hard drive for my laptop. I am probably going to go for 1TB. Any recs? Oh it doesn't have to be a portable.

Re: external hard drive

  • I have the Seagate Freeagent Go.  It's very easy to use.

    Me, too.

The only thing that I dont like is that I can't access my files on it w/a Mac, but that's not the drive's fault... lol

  • One more question how much storage is enough. I just want to back up files and photos.
  • I have the 250GB but I don't have that much that needed to be stored. You can check your computer's memory to see how much you have stored and that will give you an idea how much you need.  HTH!

  • I love my WD external hard drive.  It's very portable.  Mine is old and only 250GB, but even their new TB ones are fairly low profile.

  • If you're just storing pics and files then 1TB is too much really. Using a 1TB would be more like storing 100 movies or so (I didn't do the math on this but you get what I mean). 250GB should do you.

Western Digital makes very good drives. Their passport line is the portable drives (info and power on one USB) and the notebook line is the "non-portable" (they have a separate power line from the USB line).

  • we have had problem with the power supply on our Western Digital. The power plug connector came loose so it would turn itself on and off.

We have been happy with our Seagate.
