What do you use for storage containers in the kitchen?

We really need some and I've been going back and forth on what ones to buy. I've been looking at thrift stores for the past few months but haven't had any luck...whenever I find them, the 'air tight seal' is all broken or cracked, etc. So, I think I'm just going to buy some new. I want this for storing things like flour, pasta, etc...dry ingredients. I really wanted to get glass but I'm afraid of breaking them. So, I keep going back and forth oh THESE....they're BPA free...I haven't bought them because I really wanted to steer clear of plastic, but they seem like they'd be perfect.

So....what do you use/what do you like?

  • I almost asked this today!  I was looking for something glass, but I absolutely love those OXO ones!  I currently have some of these, but I always hurt myself opening them, and most of my measuring cups don't fit so I have to measure everything in 1/4 C increments:

  • I eat a ton of yogurt.  I buy the 4 cup tubs of it.  After it's gone, it goes through the dishwasher and voila, storage container.  They are plastic, but whatever, they are free.  I go through a tub a week, so they accumulate fast in my house.

I just stick some paper on it to label it.  I use it to freeze things too.  It's particularly great for freezing stock since many recipes call for stock in 4 cup increments.

Do you have a TJ Maxx or Marshall's near you?  They sometimes have the Oxo Pop containers for MUCH MUCH cheaper.

I bought a couple boxes of different sized mason/ball jars.  They work great, look good and were super cheap.  I have never really been concerned about them breaking.

  • I'm all over the place on containers.  I use the OXO containers for sugar, pasta, quinoa, beans and dog food.

This for rice....and we haven't dropped it yet!

These little guys for baking soda, baking powder and corn starch.

This Click Clack container for flour, which was a really bad idea.  It fits in our cupboard but I get flour all over when the container is full.  I really need to switch it out with something else.

  • I just use Pyrex. Yes, it's glass, but I've never broken any. They are very durable.

I also have ceramic ones from Crate and Barrel. They were on our wedding registry and I love them. I have a small one for brown sugar and 2 large ones for four and white sugar.

This. I even use the generic ones too from TJMaxx and Marshalls. I'm a klutz and drop them frequently and have never had one break.

  • We use Pyrex for storing in the fridge or freezer, and these for the pantry from BB&B:

We've never broken one and I've dropped them tons of times, even denting our HW floors.  The tall ones are perfect for spaghetti. Any kind of screwtop glass jar keeps dry good fresh though, we have a mismash of random canisters too, for quinoa and beans and whatnot.  The large size Ball canning jars work good too.

  • We have some cute black ones, but we don't use them like we used to.  Mostly because we can't ever remember what we put in them and hate searching through all of them to find what we're looking for, only to find out we're out and never refilled it.  :-p

So, right now we're currently just storing the things we've bought in the plastic containers that we fill up in the bulk aisle at New Seasons or WF.  We've got a medium and large empty one that we toss in the dishwasher on the top rack, and take it to the store to refill it with what we need (rice, quinoa, whatever).  When we get home we transfer it to the container (because they're usually not completely empty).  Then we wash the container and reuse it the next time.
