natural cures WE SHOULD know about...
lavender drops in the ears???honey for a cough???do these work? Anyone have any natural remedies that are worth mentioning??? I am sooooo tired of my son being on antibiotics practically this whole winter! I used grapeseed oil for infant massage, but now that he is two-his eczema is awful and i don't want to keep using cortizone and aquafor...any other options?
Re: natural cures WE SHOULD know about...
First of all, your son is ADORABLE. Secondly, I'm interested in the answers as well. I've got ds on a probiotic (boost his immune system and help improve digestion). He also takes cod liver oil which is suppose to be good for immune support, brain function, eczema and a host of other things. For his eczema we finally figured out that it seems to be food-related. It flares up REALLY badly when he eats peaches and strawberries. There's something else in his diet that's triggering it sometimes but we haven't figured out what it is yet (we haven't been keeping a food log).
I've stopped using the cortizone and aquaphor. I use California Baby lotion to moisturize all over, Californai Baby calendula cream on any eczema spots and then slather him with coconut oil to help seal in the moisture.
We use saline drops at every diaper change, even when he isn't sick. They can rinse germs out of the nasal area before they have a chance to penetrate the nasal membranes - reducing the chance of catching colds and viruses.
I can sympathize with you totally. Sean still gets sick...he's been sick for the last 3 weeks...but I still feel like I have to do anything I can to help.
We give DS "Honey Don't Cough" if we have it, or a teaspoon of raw local honey when he has a cough. I think it helps, and since he's too young for conventional cough medicines, it helps me feel like I am making a difference when he's miserable.

Oh, and I've actually read about garlic oil in the ear, not lavender. I just remembered that when I re-read your post... don't know much about it.

Local honey helps with allergies, but it has to be harvested from the area where you live. However, giving raw honey to a young child may expose said child to botulism.
For colds: Bring peeled chopped ginger, whole quartered lemons and honey to a boil. Drink hot.
1. I love your baby! I want to squeeze his cheeks.
2. I love the New Choices in Natural Healing book! I also use this as my go-to book. I recommend this as well - however I don't know if I would consider it kid-friendly.
3. I love the Neti-Pot! Whenever I have a cold/congestion, this is all that I need to clear it up (or at least help me breathe temporarily until I use it again). Again, probably not so kid-friendly though.
Sorry, I have no children yet so I'm not a huge help.
I was thinking 'use cell phone to call for help'.
Natural cures aren't magic. The key really is finding a balance. Nutrition is the foundation of health, and sometimes overzealous western medicine, IMO, reduces true health. But you also shouldn't be waving burning sage over your pancreas to cure diabetes. The key to it all is common sense.
Yes, honey works to soothe a cough. There's no trick here. Honey is viscous, it coats the throat. Just don't give to infants under 1 I believe. Putting lemon and honey in tea is great when you have a sore throat/cough. The honey soothes, and the acid in the lemon makes your throat less hospitable for germs, and the citrus gives you vitamin C. And the tea gives you fluid.
I drink throat teas when sick, with slippery elm (one of my favorite herbs by far), and other herbs. I really don't like sweetened tea so I don't bother with the honey.
Place the thin membrane from inbetween and egg and its shell on slivers. Pull it off after it has dried. This works well for hard to see slivers or on kids scared of needles and tweezers.
You can also peel the bark off a willow tree and chew on it for aspirin like benefits.
I was having some bad panic attacks for a while. I like 5-HTP. Works very well.
