Mac?

Please tell me why I should spend the extra money on a Mac laptop?

Thanks!

Re: Mac?

  • You mean "because it's better" isn't a good enough reason?  j/k
What do you plan on using your laptop for?
  • The fact that I get jealous stares isn't enough?

OK, well, I also have an iPhone. It syncs SO easily! I never have issues with my Mac or any Macs DH and I have had that weren't easily fixed.

You know how PCs get viruses A LOT? We've never had a Mac on a virus.

Sure, PCs often have "cooler" features, but what you sacrifice in speed and just use isn't worth it. My best friend bought a nice PC and after using my Mac, she swears up and down her next computer will be Mac.

Plus, after I got used to how a Mac operates, I have discovered it is MUCH MUCH more user friendly ;)

I adore my Mac and could never buy a PC.

  • Macs are the way to go.  These days I believe that there are little differences, with the exception of looks, between PCs and Macs almost all software is offered for both.

Of course, going back to basics, Macs are better for creative software while PCs offer better platforms for basic business and typing.

I love my mac and would never go back.  I am a huge fan of the 1800applecare in which I have a customer service rep who will help me at any hour of the day.

To me, macs just make more sense.

This is not necessarily true. I've had my PC for three years and never had a virus.

Macs are not the best computer out there, and neither are PCs. The best computer out there is one that will fit your needs best.

This is absolutely true. I have a mac and love it. I doubt I will ever purchase a PC again. With that said they are not the right machine for everyone. Today my dad is looking to buy a new laptop for him and my mom. While I would love it if they would get a mac, it would not be the best option for them. First, all they do is read email, play solitaire, and do some light internet surfing. But the main reason is trying to retrain my 60-year-old parents onto a Mac would be a nightmare. Mom gets confused if the color scheme changes, so I don't think a new O/S platform is the best idea at this point.

OP:  Please come back and tell us what you are looking for, what your laptop uses are, what software/apps you use, etc. We will be better able to help you narrow down your search.  Thanks!

  • If you don't want to use a mouse, the trackpad on the Mac is the way to go.  My husband has a Dell laptop through work and so do I, but my MacBook's track pad is heaven.  A lot bigger (probably twice the sq inches!) and more features like use two fingers to scroll, three to go forward/backward, four to see all your windows at once.  It's so easy to use.

And, it's so easy to use in general!  Very easy to set up, no glitches like most PCs have with a Windows OS.  Restart to fix XYZ?  Kind of like rolling your windows down every time you fill up with gas on an even day of the month - just screwy.  On a Mac, I've never had a "ctrl-alt-del" type of moment or even a need to restart or the dreaded blue screen of death.  Most of these are Windows problems (versus a PC with another OS, for example) and point to why a Mac is easier to use.

So, you can tell I'm biased towards a Mac.  I don't do graphic design or movie making, which are common reasons for using a Mac.  I chose a Mac because I wanted simplicity and an easy, integrated photo-video-music experience. And that's what I have now :)

  • I love my Mac.  It is fun, it works well, and I don't have to deal with the annoyance of shutting it down every day and waiting forever for it to wake up from sleep.

But regarding the "should I pay extra for a Mac?" question, you don't necessarily pay more for a Mac.  Sure, you aren't going to find a Mac laptop starting at $399 like you would for a Dell.   But I've read articles that say that if you compare a Mac and a PC with similar performance capabilities (meaning processing speeds, memory, hard drive size etc.), the Mac isn't more expensive.

Here's one such article (that is a little old)

True, a PC does not equal viruses. It's just been my experience that a lot of them get viruses...often. My DH works on computers and 90% of his business is PCs with a virus.

The reason a lot of them get viruses is user stupidity either by clicking of virus links in silly emails, downloading files that contain viruses without scanning them first, or not running virus software often enough.

...or that most viruses are written/coded to Target PCs and their OS's weak points, not to mention that PCs as a whole is a bigger target than Macs...
