summer plants among spring ones?

What kind of plants can I put in the bed with my tulips/daffodils/hyacinth so that I don't just have a bed of dead plants/leaves once the spring season passes?

My bulbs are about 6 inches a part in 3 rows, so do I technically have room to put more plants in the ground or is it too crowded already?  things I should of thought of before planting 150 bulbs...sigh.

Re: summer plants among spring ones?

  • I plant petunias or lantana in my hedgerow after the bulbs have started to die. I buy them in pots.
  • If you like bulbs, lillies are a good one that grow later in the summer. Around here, they usually bloom in July.
  • I have bulbs interspersed with other plants.  Usually, I am able to remove the dead leaves by around June 1-15, depending on when the bulbs bloom.  When they are all browned back, you can cut them off.  Although it's not preferable to have the dead leaves, they are not too much of an eyesore for most of the growing season.  However, I would recommend daylilies.  They will come back each year and the new foliage the daylilies produce will hide the bulb foliage.  You can try annuals, but usually cannot plant those until later and unless you buy large pots of them, they probably won't be big enough to hide the dead leaves when you want them hidden.
  • great idea on the lilies!  What about some ornamental grass or something like that?
