dishwasher detergent: reporting back

I was searching around for some dishwasher detergent ideas a little while back as the DIY stuff I tried was a fail and I ran out of ecover.

I ended up picking up some Biokleen powder and it is great! Much better than ecover. Dishes are coming up decidedly clean and it even cleans off the stubborn film that had built up on glassware. Phew. I thought I was going to have to scrub that stuff off by hand.

I noticed that one of the first ingredients is oxygen bleach so I wonder if that's the missing link in the DIY borax & washing soda recipe. Might be worth a try.

Re: dishwasher detergent: reporting back

  • Good to know, thanks!  I've got that stupid film on our dishes too from 7th Gen,  I'll pickup some Biokleen and see if it comes off.  Is it a liquid or a powder?  My DW seems to decidedly have problems with powders.

  • if you soak your glasses in a vinegar and water mix it takes off the film,  no need to do it all the time.  i haven't done it in over a month and the film is still gone.

thanks for the rec. where did you get it?

  • I found it at Whole Foods and some online drugstore sites have it also. Somewhere on the Biokleen site there's a 1.50 coupon for it but I can't find the darn thing now or I would post it.

It's a powder, though kind of drier in texture than other powders I've tried.

  • This is really late, but I've found that by adding citric acid to the homemade dishwasher detergent, it cuts through the film (which is actually caused by hard water).  I haven't really been able to find citric acid, so instead I use Lemon-flavored Kool-Aid and my dishes turn out great!  My recipe is:

     3 parts baking soda
    1 part Borax
    4 small packets UNSWEETENED Lemon-flavored Kool-Aid
