I'm in the process of applying for my professional certification. I have my master's in International Studies (which I thought was an approved NYS program for teachers). Anyway, my question NYS wants me to take 12 more credit hours in French (what my BA is in) at the grad level (aka super hard to find here!)
Do you think that I could argue my way out of having to do this and get it waved or something? or am I wasting my breathe/time trying to call?
I only have a year to take 3-4 more classes and DH and I don't have the money to do this! Not to mention finding graduate level french classes close to ROC or online is proving to be difficult.
Re: teachers...I have a question
Have you talked to someone at BOCES? They can look over your transcripts and tell you what you need to take. You can also submit everything to the state under some term I can't remember, but it basically is the individual application route, versus going through your grad program. After I finished my masters I submitted everything to the school's certification office and they did the rest, just like when I got my provisional certs after undergrad. But, there is a way to submit your application on your own instead of through colleges/universities. I looked into it when I thought about getting a 4th certification and talked to someone at Monroe #2 BOCES, they are called certification specialists. I know you are in Roch, but I don't know which district, and therefore which Monroe BOCES you would talk to. Anyway, you can submit your application to the state, and they will either approve it or send it back telling you what you need to get to complete it.
But, as for arguing your way out, I highly doubt it. The state regs are pretty clear and NYS has some of the highest requirements in the country, so I doubt they just let people "talk" their way into a certification. Besides which, even if you call, your chances of tlaking to someone who actually can help you are very slim. I tried calling a few times and it just left me more confused thatn before, and the people I got to talk to could rarely answer my questions. Definitely talk to your BOCES certification specialist, that is where I got the best information and the most help.

I'm currently applying for my professional cert in French; I already have my initial in it.
I'm actually applying for it on my own. I just checked the TEACH website to check the status of my application and they said that I needed the classes. I was just hoping that maybe if I talked to them and told them about the program they might waive that part of it for me b/c they do it for edu programs. Like I said I thought this was an approved program so I would have done things a little differently had I known this was going to happen.
I will try to check with BOCES and see if they can help. I've never had good luck with them in the past though.
