TheDuckis:Welcome back!
I have a question for you. Where did you take your photography class? (Through a community college, camera store, other?) Also, what kinds of things did it cover? I'm interested in taking one but I don't know where to start.
All of the above! My primary classes (Photography I, II, III) were at a (Delgado) community college. I've also taken classes at a (Bennett's) camera store & have several Meetup(.com) groups that I'm in. These groups are made up of beginner to professional photographers, all eager to share their knowledge.
Good luck to ya .. thanks for asking .. I'm no Stinky (yet!), but I'm getting there!

HE, I finally broke down and bought the newest edition of "Photography" by Barbara London. It's THE photography textbook that many photographers use when they want to take the CPP exam. I've decided I'm going to study that sucker cover to cover, join PPA, and try for my CPP and eventually my Master's. (I'm sick of H being the only dream-liver in our family.) Everyone who's ever gotten it raves about it - might be worth a look since it sounds like you're getting really serious about things.
C, I thumbed through it at the library (the book is hugh!), but it was an earlier edition & she referenced A LOT of film photography, so I passed on it. Is the latest edition more digital photog related?
I'm seriously thinking of joining PPA or WPPI (after I complete NYIP's Pro Photog program & receive my certificate). I subscribe to Rangefinder magazine & they have been promoting this year's WPPI convention in Vegas .. it really looks like a lot of fun. Especially rubbing elbows with some elite photogs!
I'm with you on living your dream(s) .. I've always placed mine on the backburner, but I'm determined to make this my year of realization!
I believe the newer editions have chapters devoted to digital photog, but the film aspect is still so important that they'll probably never get rid of it. If you ever want to take the CPP exam, you have to know the history of photography, darkroom techniques, etc., so it's all good stuff to know anyway.
The best magazine I've found is Professional Photographers Magazine, which is published by PPA. You can join online (ppa.org, I believe) for free, and you'll get three free issues. It's $20/year for a monthly subscription. I love it - it's all about the business aspect.
You'll need a tax ID# to join either of those organizations, and it ain't cheap to join, either. I'm going to wait until I get settled in LA to look at professional organizations.
You should post more of your work on FB - I'd love to see it!
I'ma check out ppa.org tonight. I hear what you're saying about the dues, you have to be pro & established to afford them.
But I like I said before, I want to complete the NYIP program & hopefully upgraded my camera (that 7D is delish!) before going all professional.
I have a bad habit of downloading my pics to my laptop & never, ever share or print them .. I always find something wrong with them. But my latest stuff is the Zulu parade (I shot this with the 70-200mm 2.8L IS rental lens .. loved it).
