help researching a local milk producer (alishaA?)

ok so thanks to you all i know not all milk, even organic milk, is not created equal.

i need to go take a tour of our local big dairy but i was hoping you guys could point me in the direction of online lists or places to research farms.

We have some local options- the most common one is Shamrock Farms for dairy.  i've tried to google for some dirt/impartial info on them but i'm not having any luck.  help a girl out?

Re: help researching a local milk producer (alishaA?)

  • do they have a forum or member website where you could ask questions? Like, how happy they are with their products? Word of mouth is the best, IMO.
  • shamrock farms does not.  they have a very fancy website and a spokescow but not any user contributed content.

i think they are run more like a CAFO due to the number of cows (around 10,000 total, 750ish are organic) so i'm thinking that it's harder for them to be as green as they lead their consumers to believe.

  • Have you looked into Superstition Farms in Mesa? I haven't been but what I've read has been good. They are small and family owned. I believe they even have a dairy CSA. They also own Udder Delights ice cream shop in Gilbert which is made with their milk and is delish! I'm also positive that they do tours

i need to tour them too.  their website doesn't say much about their milk, so i don't think they do organic either.

i'm torn, because right now it seems like my choices are:

    1. buy local organic milk from a CAFO type operation conveniently at the store down the street
    2. buy local smaller farm milk that's not organic and not sold near my house.  i'd have to drive 20 miles to get it (to my knowledge) and we go through milk quite often!
