organic produce and bugs?

we've been getting local organic produce delivered to our house weekly for a while now (and love it)...but we noticed that it seems to have more bugs than we're used to..little green bugs. obviously, we wash all the veggies before eating, but it kinda skeeves me out. we don't see tons, but every now and then we'll see a little green bug on the lettuce or broccoli, etc...

do you guys notice this with organic produce fresh from the farm? do you just rinse and not worry about it? orrrr am i getting bad produce?

Re: organic produce and bugs?

  • During our CSA last summer, we had lots of little green bugs hiding in our broccoli.  I didn't even notice them the first time until I steamed the broccoli and then saw green slimy spots on it...whoops.  After that we just made sure to check our broccoli very carefully before cooking it!

  • When I was a kid, I remember washing little green bug off of the broccoli that came out of my dad's garden.  Don't worry, I am sure they are harmless, well, at least that is what my mom said Big Smile
  • from time to time.. i just consider it par for the course :)

    just wash well :)

  • Doesn't organic mean no pesticides?

yep, which is why i figured the bugs were okay since no yucky chemicals are used to kill them off

  • I don't have a CSA, but I occasionally see bugs on the stuff I bring in from my yard (I don't use any pesticides).  I always warn the neighbors to do a snail check before they cook things I give them!  I just pull off the snails and rinse off everything else.  Your little green bugs might be aphids; they're a pest on everything, but not harmful to eat as far as I know.

  • I am very glad to find bugs on my organic produce.  Proud even.  That means I know it wasn't sprayed. Real food has bugs on it.  You like to eat broccoli, so do bugs.  Just give it a good rinse, a thorough shake, and run your hands all over it.
