bridal shower/baby shower
I am throwing a bridal shower next week and a baby shower in two weeks. What are some easy finger foods for the parties? Both showers are taking place at 1 pm on their respective days. I'm guessing most guests will have eaten lunch and I want something different than cheeseball and crackers, chips and dip, and things like that. DH is going to make his meatballs for me.
Re: bridal shower/baby shower
You need to consider your guests will be getting ready for then traveling to the shower before hand.
I highly suggest you serve lunch.
I have a post with recipes included for a shower here.
To me, spinach dip and bread are kind of a nicer version of chips and dip, and equally easy. (Or a fruit tray with yogurt/fondue dip)
Ditto. If someone invited me to a 1 pm shower, I would expect to be fed. If you need help coming up with some lunch ideas, I can help. How many guests are you expecting? Are you hosting this at your home or another venue? Will you have help setting up?
I agree w/ the pp's on lunch issue 1:00 is still w/ in the lunch hour. If you aren't going to serve a lunch, then I'd suggest that you put that on the invitation so that guests can plan accordingly. I recently recieved an invitation that said "coffee and cake will be served". While not the most grevious breach of ettiquet, I still raise a slight eyebrow.
I would definitely expect a full lunch, too. The best showers are the ones with good food. Hungry guests is no good. If budget is a big concern, just do lots of sandwiches, salads, maybe a pasta dish? These can all be made inexpensively. But you need lots more than apps, in my opinion.
Have fun!!
These artichoke puffs are delicious:http://jaimecooks.wordpress.com/2010/02/15/artichoke-puffs/
Oh, and not that it needs to be said, but if I got invited to a 1:00 p.m. shower, I would not eat beforehand, as I would expect to be fed. This actually happened to me once, and I was starving the entire shower and spent the whole event thinking about what I would eat when I got home.
i also agree, 1pm is lunch time.
pinwheels are my fave, i get the tomato basil and garden veggie (and sometimes the jalepeno) (sometimes add in plain ones too) tortillas, spread with chive onion or other flavored creamcheese, a few slices of deli meat and cheese, crunchy lettuce and sundried julianned tomatoes. roll tight and cut like sushi.
i usually do a variety of meat/cheese combos. turkey/muenster ham/cheddar roastbeef/swiss
i also LOVE spinach dip. (follow the recipe on the back of the Knorr vegetable soup packet) i have done the spinach dip in a bread bowl before, its kind of a waste. there isnt enough bread inside the bowl, so crackers or more bread is needed anyway, and the bowl gets all soggy. i just use a pretty bowl.
what is the guest of honors fave foods? maybe have a quesadilla bar (i have a quesadilla maker, its awesome!) or for ease, take and bake pizza
ive been to a party where someone brought simple ham and cheese sammies, cut with her kids sandwich cutter, (cuts the sandwich in half, 2 hearts, and cuts the crust off) they were a huge hit!.
I agree with everyone else. 1pm is lunch time and I'd expect a full lunch meal.
I agree that I would expect lunch.
I'd go for chicken salad in small potato rolls, pinwheels like pp suggested, a veggie pizza cut into small squares (get pizza dough, spread with a little herbed cream cheese, top with finely chopped veggies like peppers/broccoli/zucchini, drizzle with olive oil, shake on some oregano and a bit of salt, bake until crust is browned, veggies are tender and cheese is creamy-melted).
Add a green or pasta salad and some dips.

I just hosted a day time baby shower for my sister, I have a really great Italian Shop with great food, I ordered a bunch of different Panini's and finger sandwiches, cold salads, tomato fresh mozzarella, pasta salad, and potato & macaroni salad. An inexpensive alternative would be soup too. Good Luck & remember to have fun!!
Lunch Suggestion:
I recently went to a bridal shower that had a hot chicken casserole, pre-tossed Caesar salad, a simple fruit salad and bread as the meal. It seemed simple enough and it was tasty and filling.
Here is the chicken casserole recipe:
8 Cups Diced Chicken Breast
1/2 C. Fresh Lemon Juice (3 lemons)
2 tsp. Salt
3 C. Mayonaisse
4 C. Diced Celery ( I used about 3 to 3-1/2 C.)
2 C. Slivered Almonds (bake in 300 degree oven until lightly browned)
1 tsp. Onion Juice
2 C. Grated Sharp Cheddar Cheese
3 C. Crushed Potato Chips (Note: I personally may opt for more slivered almonds in leiu of the chips)
Lay 4 to 5 boneless, skinless chicken breasts on top of the onion
Sprinkle 1 packet of chicken taco seasoning on top
Dot with a little butter or margarine
Pour about a 1/4 cup of water over
Cook on high for 4 hours, shred
