Good morning! My name is Melissa from California and I am going to Kauai in June (thanks to mom and dad for an awesome 30th birthday gift!) w/out DH...anyways, I'll be staying in a condo near Poipu and would like to know what some local things are that I can do. I'd like to get out and about as well as spend some time on the beach. I was thinking about taking a horseback riding tour and maybe doing an ATV ride but aside from that, not sure what else to do! Suggestions?
Thanks all so much,
Mel~ (a Hawaii novice)
Re: Kauai travel question
Kauai is GORGEOUS! What a great way to celebrate your 30th bday! You say hubby is not going, but are you going alone? Or with mom and dad? Anyway...you'll want to rent a car for sure.
I recommend a snorkel/sail tour...we've done Captain Andy's a bunch and also Holo Holo Charters. They take you up the Napali Coast, feed you and let you snorkel. It's a great way to spend the day. If that's not up your alley you could just do a sunset sail, which is just as nice, but not as long.
Kayaking the Wailua River and hiking to Secret Falls is also fun.
I highly recommend you get a copy of "Kauai Revealed"...

It is chock full of great advice on activities, places to see, things to do and the best deals on the island...

ditto this, and the hike. I didn't get to do any zip lining or kayaking while we were there since I was pregnant and didn't want to do anything too adventurous, but I hope you have a great time! oh and when you go the blowhole down near Poipu if you watch closely, esp in the early mornings, you'll see turtles

I also recommend the first part of the Kalalau hike, to Hanakapiai Beach (4 miles RT). You can go further to the waterfall if you want something longer (8 miles RT).
Definitely spend time at Waimea Canyon. The Canyon Trail hike is great and very scenic (I think this was also about 4 miles RT). It's fun checking out the lookouts, but there are so many great trails, even a novice hiker can get so much more out of the experience by checking one out.
We did the Kauai Sea Tours speed rafting adventure, which was fantastic. The Na Pali Coastline is definitely worth seeing -- you can either go rafting (adventure) or on a catamaran tour (more leisurely).
We had fun at Secret Beach, eating shave ice and watching the sunset at Kekaha, and beach walking along Hanalei Bay. We also plan to kayak the Wailua River next time we go.
"Kauai Revealed" is a great resource, HOWEVER, DH and I were both irritated by the author's occasional condescending tone -- e.g., try poi just so you can bad mouth itself yourself. I also used Yelp a lot for restaurant reviews.
Enjoy!
