Re: internet provider

  • We've been using Clear for about a year now and love them.

We pay $45 a month for 12Mb speeds, and for one of the WiMax USB modems.

I think we've had the internet go out once in the past year, and when we called them about it we were able to speak to a real person on the phone.

I can't tell a difference in the speeds we get compared to Comcast we had in Boston (they're evil and should die because they're the worst.company.ever!) or the FIOS we had here before switching to Clear.  The speeds do vary a bit, according to Jeff, but it's not something I notice, even when watching a TV show or movie online.

Verizon was tolerable.  The FIOS was pricey, and we seemed to have more issues with it going down.  The worst part was trying to fix anything with them.  First of all, we never received a paper bill from them because they got our address wrong.  We tried for 3 months to have it fixed.  They route your calls to the state you have service in based on the area code of the phone you're calling from.  Since we have MA numbers still, we would always get sent to MA Verizon.  Then we'd spend 30 minutes trying to explain that we're in Oregon, have cable/internet in Oregon and need to speak to the OR department (and no, we don't want to sign up for one of your cell phone plans, kthx).  Then we'd end up talking to customer service in Oklahoma and going through the exact same issue.

Apparently, they weren't able to do anything to the account via e-mail and couldn't give us the number for OR Verizon.  After 3 months we gave up and just used the online statement.  For the next 3 months, things were OK.  But then they started billing us incorrectly for the DVR we were supposed to have free for a year.  They were so helpful about fixing the billing issues once we got ahold of someone.  But the lovely thing about that was that we were going to have to call them back every.single.month to get our bill adjusted.  After the call routing issues, there was no way that was going to happen.  That was the end of Verizon!

  • That sucks you've had issues with Verizon.  We've had them and FIOS for 2 years and have never had an issue with the service or billing.  The only time we've had an issue is when the power outlet the "fios box" is plugged into in the garage tripped a breaker and DH couldn't figure it out.  Hopefully your situation is rare for them :(

I don't think cable companies like us.  We had such a horrible one in Boston that we reported them to the BBB to get billing issues worked out.  Comcast wasn't much better.

I would go back to Verizon, but Jeff was the one who always had to deal with their customer service and refuses.  So, if we ever want more TV channels we'll be getting satellite.  : )   Or we'll have to get a local phone number!

  • I we have Verizon FIOS and have super-fast internet and cable with DVR for a really good price.

We pay a total of $180 per month for intenet, cable with ALL the movie channels and 2 DVR's plus HD channels and a home phone.

  • We were paying 30/month for verizon DSL....but we canceled it and got comcast (even though i totally agree they're the DEVIL) recently because they had a special for 20/month...we just couldn't afford to pay more than that right now, otherwise i'd totally go with clear! comcast might still have the special going on...we also got a $75 visa card just for signing up with them! the internet is faster than it was when we had verizon DSL...i'm sure the FIOS would be faster though

  • I use Hevanet.com

They are HQ'd LOCALLY (supporting LOCAL jobs & economy), great customer service and reasonable rates. I've used them for years and never had a problem. In fact, they have helped me with IBM, MS Outlook AND Comcast problem even though there is no reason they need to except that they offer stellar customer service.
