Need organic pest control for plants

I have a few seedlings that are being eaten by who knows what.  The seedlings are kept inside at night and taken outside from morning to early afternoon to get sunlight.  I noticed that one of the radishes and most of the serranos are being munched on.  I checked the leaves and found no bugs...  What can I use to prevent them from being eaten while they are still in the trays?

Re: Need organic pest control for plants

  • I don't know where you are but could it be slugs or snails? They eat little holes in leaves. You could bait them with beer - use a frizbee or some other very very flat dish (even a plate will work), lay it out at night full of beer where the pests get to your plants and if, the next day, you have shells about - you know what it was/is!
  • Identification is key. If you don't know what the culprit is, you are not going to be able to stop them effectively. For example, clove oil will kill bugs, but it also kills greenery. So you'd only use that very carefully with specific bugs that nothing else will work on. I went to a seminar this weekend and they suggested the book Good Bug, Bad Bug.

  • We used this (Captain Jacks' Bug Brew) for our vegetable garden and have had very good results against our caterpillars. It's recommended for organic gardening and you can find it at your local nurseries.

Good to know!  I've started planning what we're going to try to grow in our garden this year (it'll be our first one) and was wondering what kind of bug killers are available that are more organic.  Thanks!
