decorating help pleease.

I really suck at decorating. Help please! I want to get curtains...or something... for my small living room windows. But i don't know what and more importantly what color!

I can't see these pics here at work. So I hope the pic I'm thinking of is in this post. But for a reminder... http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/24738398.aspx
Look at the pic w/ the fireplace. I'm talking about the two small windows on either side.

As for the room... the walls are light green. Our furniture is a darker green. The floor and our coffee table is a cherry red wood. Black rug under the table. Throw pillows... the ones that came w/ the furniture are different greens & white strips (maybe even a slight gold in there.. that we dont like much) And we have a few black throw pillows (which we were going to stick with completely but we grew to kinda like the ones that came with it). Floor lamp is black. And for now, our tv stand is a darker wood. But next year, when we get a flat screen, we'll either mount it or get a black small stand.

what would youuu do w/ these windows?

ps. And expect a bedroom curtain post in the future. I'd do it now but I dont have pics of the furniture cause i think that'll be important lol.

Re: decorating help pleease.

  • i really like brown curtains with the light green. that is what i have in my bedroom and it goes well together and then maybe add some brown throw pillows on the couch to tie all the colors together.
  • I really like brown also. but I was nervous what it would look like with the black stuff. I hate decorating, grrr.

Exactly. My first thought looking at the green, and you describing dark wood, "brown!" but your like of the black stuff made me hesitant too! And black curtains are just depressing.

Um... I know you say you don't like the gold in that pillow, but maybe like a gold/cream/tan type shade of curtain? My other suggestion is a deep red/burgundy to maybe go with your cherry wood, but I'm hesitant again, since I can't physically see it, that it may scream "Christmas" year round when put with your wall color.

Those are my thoughts, sorry I'm not much help! Maybe it got your wheels turning though?

  • Do you want curtains to block out the sun/light? Or just to add something to the window? I really don't like brown & black mixed. Could you have a green curtain with black sheers? I always feel I suck at decorating. I started lurking on the D&R board, now post there and I got a ton of ideas. Look at different peoples bios/blogs. I feel better about decorating now. Target has some curtains/sheers for really reasonable.
  • the only thing about going with a green is since we already have two different color greens (walls, furniture) that it might be hard to find a good shade.

and to be honest, our house already feels like xmas year round lol. that red fireplace... and then the dining room right off the LR is bright red. lol. And we're keeping some of the red in the DR.

i agree that black is to depressing. But we get good sunlight in there cause off to the right is a bright sunroom full of windows. but i still dont think i'd want black.

Maybe i'll look into some 'cherry' colors. Or maybe i'll even attempt to branch out and atleast look at some goldish/tans. All the framing in the house is white though... so i guess i could even just stick with that.

  • oh and I'm mostly blocking out my neighbor from seeing in. His one upstairs window is looking directly in. One day last week, i was laying on the couch watching tv. looked up and there he was hanging out his window pushing snow off his roof. freaked me ouuut.

I'm debating on just finding fabric and making my own. Just the kind that hang half way down... that would do it. But im nervous lol.

I wander over on D&R once in awhile. they helped me out on paint colors once before!

  • A deep plum or a red are complimentary colors to green. Maybe a rust too. I love decorating!
  • Just looked at the pics, deep plum would be my choice

    I love decorating!

Can I hire you then? lol I have a bedroom that needs 'finished' also please.

I admit, the idea of decorating is fun. But not actually doing it cause i'm not creative lol.

  • I think you should do floor to ceiling drapes. I think it will look much better than half since it is a formal living room. I think you should pick a curtain that is a light color since everything is so dark in the room. I'm thinking a nice print would be good to add some spice to the room. What do you think about this combo?

PS - Are you going to paint the fireplace?   Here's a cool repainted fireplace that was posted on the D&R board.

  • you think that long of a curtain, really? The bottoms of these windows are at the level of my head. I didn't even think of doing long ones!
And I reeeally like that curtain/pillow combination. But I can see tj not going for the pillows. He's such a hard one to work with! grrrr. But I'm going to run the long curtain past him!

Since floor length curtains was brought up, i have a question. I love them. And wanted them for our bedroom. But the radiator is right underneath of the one window. Letting the curtains drape over it will trap the heat I've read. Behind it, looks silly in my head. So our only option would be to leave them tied open, huh?

And painting the fireplace crossed my mind. But we never made any decision on that yet. If it was already painted, I'd be ok with it. But since it hasn't, I feel like I shouldn't mess with the natural brick just yet haha. if that makes sense.

Of course. I knew you would pop up with something knock-out.

  • I would do long curtains and tie them to the side with ties and cover the radiator with a radiator cover. I would put a similar one on the other side for symmetry (in LR).

OR get curtains that stop right at the top of the radiator covers. I think it will give more of an finished look.

PS - Thanks to pre-marital counseling I'm in charge of ALL decorating decisions. Most of the time I just do stuff when Brock isn't home because even though its all on me, he loves to give me his opinion.  Whenever I ask him what he thinks something will look like he will say he won't like it. Then I do it anyway and when he sees it he likes it or doesn't even notice. Our style is very different so I listen politely then just ignore any negative remarks or suggestions I don't agree with.

  • Kendra LOVE the curtains!!!! I was waiting for your post!  I love the idea of the floor to ceiling curtains.  Makes the wall/window look bigger.

I would love it if Kendra lived near me to help me decorate!
