has anyone done this in the past year? I have a guy coming out for a quote from Lowes tonight. any other carpet installation places that are competitive. i don't need anything fancy (just tear out old, put the new in, and haul away the old). we are just putting our house for sale so want to freshen it up.
thx:)
Re: replacing carpet?
i wondered about them! maybe i will skip an estimate from them and try kepples instead. i am trying to limit myself to 3 estimates since they add up!
did you hagle with the estimate guy or just call lowes to try and get price down? how much did you get price down from original estimate? i have never done this and don't want to get ripped off? any other tips? thx

butting in here - anyone know how much more steps are? I would love to recarpet our steps at some point and get rid of the crappy builders grade carpet. They already have stains that didn't come up with steam cleaning. I want to put in a better high-traffic carpet. Berber maybe?
the builder grade carpet in our living room is awful already (less than 3 yrs), but I want to rip that up soon and put Pergo or hardwood down. We upgraded our padding, but that doesn't change the crappy carpet
You can just call and ask how much per step it's on top of the installation price. It also makes a diference if your carpet wraps around the entire step and we have exposed wood on the profile of our steps and that is evidentally easier to carpet.
As far as haggling we were in the store after the guy came out to measure, it wasn't an on site estimate and it was free. We didn't have to commit then. When we went in the store and he told us the price we just said we needed to be closer to $800. We knew that was unreasonable but he got us darn close. They have to really look at the measurements evidentally they round up or something and things can be shaved down. He also gave us a better install price. We didn't ask but were about to walk away...and come back another day and the guys sensed that i think and did what he had to. I am so bad at haggling we didn't even realize it was happening we just didn't have alot of extra money to spend. They also left us the extra piece there wasn't much waste.
