moving to south florida advice please
We just found out we are being relocated from Rochester NY. I don't want to be negative but I am very sad about this move. My husband is going to be working near the MIA airport but would like to possibly live in Weston (he has family there). We are used to more of the suburb life with cute towns and cafes, restaurants and great schools 9but we only have an 8 month old but I'm a teacher). Can you please recommend an area(s) to look into. We are meeting with a realtor this weekend. What do you think of MIramar or Pembroke Pines? Thank you so much

aw, don't be too bummed. I'm a transplant to here too, about a year and a half ago. I don't LOVE it down here, but it is certainly growing on me.
we live on Miami Beach and absolutely love it. it's got a crazy nightlife, but also a fun day life, which we're waaaaay more into. Weston to MIA airport could be a bit of a trek... I'm not 100% sure about the traffic patters, but it's certainly worth looking into.
moving is always tough, especially when you don't really know people. let us all know when you move down here- there's some nice girls on this board, and we would love to help.
Weston is a beautiful area to live in and if your husband has family there that is always wonderful. Its a bit far from Miami International Airport but the airport is easily accessible to all expressways so the commute is not terrible.
I love pembroke pinse too. Great malls and great houses out in that area and very quiet as well. I used to be known as the "elderly" retirement spot but that is not the case anymore.
I don't know Miramar too well...but I would just say you have to be careful with Miramar- there are some good and some bad areas in Miramar.
I can empathize with your sadness. I would have to move away from somewhere I love, but give it a chance! There is so much to do in South Florida and the weather is wonderful.
He's my fairytale, a dream when I'm not sleeping.
<a href="http://s279.photobucket.com/albums/kk121/behapybride/?action=viewHi!
A move is hard enough and with a 8 month old it's even more tough. I agree with the ladies Weston is a bit of a drive to Miami International Airport but do able you have easy access to highways. I agree with Miramar stay to the West Side not East Side.
I definetely recommend Miami Lakes. I live in Miami Lakes it is a small town with so much life. From young professionals to retirees. You have shops, parks, and nice restaurants. The elementary schools are excellent and Middle Schools are okay along with Highschools. I have included two websites for the town of Miami Lakes incase you would like to do some reasearc. Good Luck!

Welcome to our board and soon to our state!
I am familiar with all the areas you are talking about. I grew up in Pembroke Pines.
- Weston is very nice and definitely has the suburbia feel. There are beautiful homes and lots of nice restaurants and places to go. You have lots of good schools as well, both public and private. However, your DH is looking at an hour commute to and from work everyday. The traffic is terrible.
- Pembroke Pines is also great and definitely has a mix of age groups. You can get a larger home there and almost all the schools are A schools. You would only be about 15 minutes away from Weston at most. There is also a charter school and a couple of private schools in the area. The commute is also about an hour from this location.
- Miramar is great if you are in the new Miramar. The old Miramar isn't the greatest area. However, if you go to west Miramar, you are fine and I'm sure you would like it. The homes are new and there is a lot of new development around there. They are still building it up so there isn't that much around, but you are very close to Pembroke Pines and to Miami Lakes which both have lots to do.
Other suggestions:
- Miami Lakes. Miami Lakes is farther south but you will be about 20 minutes away from the family in Weston. You are also closer to your DH's job and there is also a lot of nice houses and neighborhoods there. The schools are good as well!
- Doral. Doral is even farther south and would be the closest for your DH. They are also building up Doral so there is a lot of newer developments. There are lots of restaurants as well. Not sure about the schools in that area, but you can look that up online to see what grade they have. You would be farther from the Weston family, but I would say only about 30 minutes or a little longer with the highways.
Ultimately, you have to decide how much DH wants to commute and how close you want to be to your family down here. I know my mom commutes to that area from Pembroke Pines and she absolutely hates it. She wishes they could move further south. Honestly, the drive is exhausting, I have done it before. There are lots of nice neighborhoods around, so once you decide how far DH wants to commute, you can find something you like .
One more thing, getting a teaching job down here is really difficult right now, just to prepare you. You may have more luck in a private school if you are open to that!
WOW! So sorry for all the typos.....i've been working since 3am! Holy Moly I must remember not to nest while i'm half asleep lol
OMG don't even worry about it! I get the picture Anyways thank you so much for all of the wonderful suggestions and help. I think once I actually go this weekend I will have a better idea but I will definitely look into the areas you all have suggested!! Thank you thank you thank you
