Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc? Which brand/model do you recommend? And how much did you pay?

What PP said...go with Nikon or Canon for DSLRs. I shoot with a Nikon D90, but it is probably too expensive/advanced for an entry-level. I know more about Nikons now than I do Canons (at least DSLR-wise), so if you are looking for an entry level DSLR, take a look at the Nikon D3000, or see if you can find even a cheap D40 (that's been discontinued) somewhere. Both are great cameras.
I love my D90, but I need the megapixels for wildlife photography and cropping, as well as the more readily accessible buttons for changing settings on the fly. If you are going to be shooting in "auto" mode or just want to try out a DSLR, I'd definitely stick with a D40 or D3000.
With Canons, take a look at the Rebel series. They have some entry level DSLRs in that series, as well. They are also great DSLRS, but I just can't recommend a specific one since I haven't used one in about 4 years (and back then I used the Canon 400d - which I believe is the Rebel XTi).
