New to San Diego

Hi Ladies!

My husband and I just relocated from Cleveland, OH so I wanted to introduce myself.  My name is Katie and I have been married to Jon for almost three years.  Jon was recently offered a position in the La Jolla/UTC area, so we took the plunge and made a cross county move.  I am currently job hunting and exploring volunteer opportunities to keep myself busy.

We've been exploring the area on the weekends and are always looking for suggestions, so what is your favorite thing to see or do in San Diego?

Re: New to San Diego

  • Welcome to San Diego!  This board is really S L O W.

I love walking around Balboa park on the weekends. A few weeks ago we went to the Wild Animal Park for the first time and had a blast.

I second Balboa Park -- it's a beautiful place just to walk around, and there's so much located there (museums, theatre, gardens, etc.). My favorite is when the International Houses do open house on Sundays from 12:00-4:00. The houses represent countries from the United Nations, and they provide food and performances. Last time we went, we had fresh soda bread and listened to a Celtic trio at the House of Ireland.

Once baseball season starts, you've GOT to head to Petco Park and catch a Padres Game.

The Gaslamp is the best place for "nightlife" (lots of clubs, bars, restaurants).

I'd recommend trying to get to all of our big tourist spots: touring the bay (Hornblower Cruises), the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Legoland, etc.

  • Welcome to San Diego!

If you're living in the UTC area, it's a short drive into downtown La Jolla.  It's beautiful down there.  One of my favorite brakfast/brunch places is in downtown LJ on Wall St, called Coffee Cup Cafe (also sometimes mission Coffee Cup).

Little Italy in Downtown SD is a nice place too.  You can walk around & explore the shops and restaurants.  From there it's a short walk down to the harbor.  It's fun to go watch the cruise ships coming & going.  There's also Seaport Village, the Gaslamp, and, as everyone's said, Balboa Park.  Hillcrest & North Park can be fun too.

Umm..yeah, looking over what I wrote, I guess I like a whole lot of this city.  Something you could do, if you're looking for outings, is to go on yelp.com and type in what you're looking for, whether it's somewhere for dinner, a breakfast place, or an activity.

  • We love early morning runs/walks along Torrey Pines state beach and up the hill. We'll usually walk over to Carmel Valley Road and Robertos for some breakfast burritos after. Nothing like a $3 breakfast with an ocean view!

Balboa Park for picnics and relaxing are a must. If you do any jogging, hiking or mountain biking there are some great trails in the Penasquitos Canyon in Sorrento Valley (a few miles away from UTC). We've seen lots of wild life and there's even a small waterfall at certain times of the year (now probably).

In the fall head to Julian for apple season (pie and cider).

  • Thanks so much for all of the great suggestions!

We went to the zoo this past Sunday and had a great time.  The Wild Animal Park is next on the list, along with a picnic in Balboa Park.  We're actually living in the Carlsbad area right now, which makes it more difficult to get to La Jolla, downtown, etc., but we're making it work and enjoying every minute of it!

  • Hi Katie and ladies!

This is my first post on The Nest =)

I am about to get married (just 10 days away!) and move to the UTC area of La Jolla as well! My FI is from San Diego, so I've spent a good deal of time there (both La Jolla and Pacific Beach) but won't actually live there until the wedding. I sure am glad to know that I will not be the only one new to the area!
