So, usually MH is...on board with my little green projects but is quick to tease when I go overboard...I have mentioned the eye rolling about my sayings "Tomatoes farmed by slaves!" (I usually say this as I wave a tomato in his face--and I have big eyes--I'm a cartoon so I get why he thinks it's funny)..
However....recently he saw this show about how Hawaii has been ruined by trash..and in it they showed these sea birds that live on the outer Hawaiian islands...and they eat the plastic trash floating in from that trash island..and he was APPALLED. They showed how the birds were dying in droves. Literally. They showed the birds decaying--and their stomachs still had plastic items in their bellies...she picked out things and laid them out..the most were fishing bobbers, then bic lighters, children's toys--and she would say, 'I bet if you don't fish, you feel okay about yourself, don't smoke--yay for you--you aren't contributing, no kids--right on.." then..she picked out all these toothbrushes from their bellies...and she goes.."But everyone is using toothbrushes..."
So..somehow this really made MH think about this and how horrible it was....
Today he comes upstairs and he tells me he downloaded this cool Iphone Ap from the Monterrey bay aquarium that tells you all the different kinds of fish--based on your locale--the types that are best to buy (so in CO--NEVER buy orange roughy for example)...and then for certain types--how it is caught/farmed..so like for here, Alaska wild caught salmon is best, then pacific wild caught, then farmed is worse--it's a little fishing shopping guide. I was so proud of him and his little eco movement
Re: I have to AW my cute husband.
I love this whole post, from the slave-worker tomato story visuals, to the passionate explanation of trashed birds, and then your hubby taking the initiative to find out something. bravo!
I think sometimes you just hear things and yeah, maybe it seems overboard, but when you sit and watch a good documentary (with sound facts, not crazy talk), it can really be motivating.
Oh, I wouldn't be too jealous! I''m not surprised that he had the response to the show. MH is an avid outdoorsman and loves hiking and flyfishing ...I would say it is a passion--so nature shows are always on and flyfishing actually really promotes a "leave no trace" attitude..but when he came upstairs on his own with the Ap..I was really surprised. We just ate fish the other night, and when we were at the grocery store we had a choice between farmed and wild salmon--and I said, "we need to get the wild" and he asked why--and I told him how the farmed was so bad...
He said he hadn't heard that before..I almost wonder if that's where he got the idea to look it up. He can be a total skeptic until he reads or sees stuff for himself. When he had the ap, I didn't want to ruin the moment..so I just nodded and said, "wow--that is sooo neat! I can't wait to use at when we are shopping!"
I love your whole post and this response to your DH, so cute! My paper copy of the guide is so worn and tattered, I wish I had an iPhone so I could have the app. FYI, there's an iPhone app for the Dirty Dozen also.
You can dowload it and keep a copy in your wallet. I get a new one every year (a perk of living so close to the Aquarium).
