Hello ladies!
Just wanted to tell you a little about myself and hopefully meet new people/friends as well.
My DH is AD AF. We moved to the area the week before Christmas and we're just now getting settled in. I'm 22 and he is about to be 24. Married in June. We are from South AR, but lived in Bossier City, LA the past 2 years (he was stationed overseas 1 of the 2).
Please ask plenty of Q's! I would love to get to know you as you get to know me too!
Re: Newbie
Thanks to you all for the welcomes and congrats!
DH actually works in a training squadron at Lackland. We live near 151 and I-410. I'm currently working off of I-10 at Wurzback; however, I'm looking for a different job.
This board needs to LIVEN up! Where is everyone?
Welcome to the board! H and I are both from SA. I moved to SA sophomore year of HS (so I guess 9 years ago? wow, didn't realize it's been that long), went away for college, and now am back for med school. H and I got married this past December. I'm living over near the health science center (so near where you work), but H is still in school in North Carolina.
I have to admit we are kind of boring, haha (my parents have always referred to us as an old married couple). We mostly prefer to just spend relaxing time together, like watching movies, going out to dinner, and visiting our families. We will go out with H's brother and SIL whenever H is back in town, and one of our favorite spots is Flying Saucer on Huebner and I-10 (just about every type of beer you can imagine). Our other favorite restaurants are mostly chains (I know, lame, haha) so those aren't really the best recommendations. Sorry I can't be much more help in recommending things to do!
What kind of work do you do?
I completely understand where you are coming from! DH and I are the same way. We really act like we are in our 40's rather than early 20's... LOL We generally go on a date night every weekend and that usually consists of a nice restaurant and a movie... That's why I was trying to get some suggestions. Don't get me wrong, dinner and a movie are totally in our comfort/fun zone, but I figured mixing it up a bit may be a good idea... Don't wanna get too boring at 22, right? hahaha
I do administrative work. When we were in Bossier, I was an Executive Admin Assistant. I'm currently working at the Omni as a Sales Assistant; however, like an idiot, I went through Appleone (Employment Services) to get a job. I came to the Omni as a temp receptionist. They hired a receptionist and promoted me to temp Sales Assistant. Pretty much where I stand now is due to contract, they can't hire me full time until I've worked 520 hours and am outside of the contract agreement. So, if they don't find anyone else by that time (Mid-April) they will hire me. But they have to continue to search or it's breech of contract... Pretty messed up situation... So, I'm actively looking and I guess we'll just see where I am mid-April...
Linzlars, how often do you get to see DH? When will he be finished with school in NC? I know it's got to be hard being away from him... (especially being newly weds!) My H was stationed in Korea Nov 2008-Nov 2009. We got married in the 28 days that he was home on mid-tour in June. So, he was gone the entire planning process and for the first 5 months of our marriage... So, I def sympathize!
Haha yea, I understand the whole trying to not be too boring thing. When we try to throw in something to mix it up it usually ends up being one of those "what do you want to do?" "I don't know, what do you want to do?" (think vultures from the Jungle Book, haha).
If you like doing any outdoorsy stuff, there a few parks in town that can be fun to go to for a hike or picnic. OP Schnabel is on Bandera toward west 1604 and has some good natural trails as well as a pretty long new paved trail. I haven't actually been there yet, but there is also Government Canyon out west past 1604 that is supposed to have great hiking trails.
That is an unfortunate situation you're in with your job. I hope it all works out for you! You'll have to keep us updated with the job hunt.
We don't get to see each other that often (just school breaks like Thanksgiving and spring break), which really sucks, but we've done it before so I like to think of as pros by now (of course, it's nothing compared to what you and your DH do. I really respect and admire you for that!). He actually took a long break during his undergrad career and moved to Seoul, South Korea for about 2.5 months in Nov 2008 to pursue another career. When that didn't work out, he went back this past fall to finish his undergrad degree. He only has one semester left after this spring, but right now he is trying to decide whether to finish it in summer sessions or do a regular fall semester (the financial aid will determine which one), so he will either be back for good in August or next Dec. It's really not that much longer, and I'm so proud of him for finishing school so it's worth it. He will actually be back in 9 days for his spring break, and then I'm going back out with him to NC the week after for my spring break. Yay!
How are you liking San Antonio so far? Have you met a bunch of other military families?
Haha yea, I understand the whole trying to not be too boring thing. When we try to throw in something to mix it up it usually ends up being one of those "what do you want to do?" "I don't know, what do you want to do?" (think vultures from the Jungle Book, haha).
We're there with you guys! LOL We thought of trying out Dave & Busters for a change... But have yet to follow through with that one...
That is so funny that YH went to Seoul in Nov 2008. That's the same place/time my H went to be stationed there for a year. He was at Osan AFB which is in Seoul! What a small world it is!
I know what ya mean about finishing school. DH has been trying to take classes (online) since he's been in the military. Here lately though, he's had to drop them due to work and with this new career, he won't be able to take any now either. I graduated with my Associates in May of 2008 and had to take a break, bc we knew we would be moving. I'm planning on getting back in to finish my Bachelor's this summer. Hopefully I'll be able to get my Master's before we move too. I'm thinking of going to OLLU for Saturday classes, but that all depends on how my job search turns out...
That's exciting about getting to see YH! I know that the days seem SO long when you know it's getting close!
That is pretty weird they were both in Seoul at the same time! Not exactly the place you'd think to cross paths in. I remember DH telling me about the "military side" of town and how when he would go out clubbing in that area they would run into tons of military guys. Would you ever want to be stationed overseas with him? I think it could be an amazing experience if you're up for all the challenges that go along with it.
It is tough to finish up school when you have so many other things going on in your life. BIL and SIL are in the same situation taking online classes right now and it's going great for them. I hope whatever ends up happening for you, whether it be going back to school, finding a new job or even keeping the one you have now, that it works out for the best and that you're happy with the outcome! Good luck with all of it!
Thank you for that! Yea, I went to visit him at the end of January last year. We went downtown quite a bit, shopping, of course!
I would love to be stationed overseas with him. We have been trying to go to Europe for a while now. I mean, we're in San Antonio for atleast 4 years. I would just really like to travel the world.
