Air & Water Show newbie questions

Every year we say we want to come down for the air & water show, and every year we think it's too much of  a hassle (coming from burbs), it's too hot, etc.  The weather this weekend will be gorgeous, and I'd really like to go. I've also never been to a beach in Chicago!  So we want to make a whole fun day of it.

1) where should we sit? (what area specifically?)
2) what should we bring? (blanket, food, cooler, drinks, radio, etc?)
3) if we drive, where should we park? can we walk from there with all our stuff?  cost?
4) if we take the Metra into the city (union station), how do we get to the show area from there? (EL? walk? cab? free trolley)?  We are claustrophobic and DH might have a panic attack standing on the EL with so many people. We'd rather avoid the EL at all costs.
5) any other tips you can offer?

 thanks!!!

Re: Air & Water Show newbie questions

  • It spans from North Avenue to Fullerton so they will all be busy. It will be croweded at the beaches...worst of all North Avenue where it's based.

If you don't likw crowds I would take a cab from the train or drive (though parking will be tough). An alternative would be Olive Beach at Lake Shore and Grand...you'll still be able to see it all but will be somewhat removed. Also, it's near the trolley stop (it is close to Navy Pier). A lot of the big boats do cruises too and might not be as chaotic...hope that helps.

I would just bring what you can comfortably carry and pack extra patience and with the great weather and  show-it will be chaotic downtown. Good luck!

  • Try Belmont Harbor area...also less crowded (I used to live down there in Lakeview).  Bring the blanket or beach towel to sit on and some snacks / drinks - you could take a break and walk down to Diversey / Broadway as there is a Jamba Juice, Chipotle, Panera and a great Mediterranean cafe next door.  Parking may be a bigger issue.  You could just park further out in Lakeview (around Ashland / Diversey area) and just cab it to the lake.  If you take Metra, you could get off at Clybourn stop and cab it too...prob a $15 ride each way.
