Internet on the run - how?

Hi - I need your advice....

I need to get onto the internet when away from my house now I have a more mobile life. I need to check e-mail and reply and I need to be able to tap out word documents also and view websites. I am stuck as to whether an G3 iphone is what I need or a netbook - any advice?

IPhone: great for fast internet coverage, easy to do emails etc but I guess hopeless at word docs.

netbook: great for word docs, email but what about internet browsing? slow and internet pages don't show so well - have to scroll across as well as up and down.

I was thinking as the need to do odd word docs is important maybe I get a cheap netbook and then connect to the internet with a G3 mobile phone - is it possible to link the two together? Am I missing something and over complicating things?

Re: Internet on the run - how?

  • Yes, I believe you can tether an iPhone's internet connection for a netbook via bluetoooth.  So your best bet might be both??

It really depends when and how you need to access the internet.  Will you need access from your car on-the-go/on the bus/while walking, or will you be stationary but just not at home, maybe at a coffee shop/restaurant/office?  If you're literally moving, it might be hard to get and keep a WiFi connection without the use of a network of a mobile phone company.  If you'll be sitting still, you would be fine with a netbook as long as WiFi is available.

ETA: After some googling, iPhone tethering isn't currently available in the US, d'oh.

  • Are you stuck on getting an iPhone? While you can't tether through bluetooth with an iPhone, you can with most blackberries.

    P.S. It's 3G, not G3 :)

  • Thanks for your input -

3G/G3 - ooops! - well proves I guess I am not up with all the technical stuff!

I am biased to the iphone - dur to the look, interface, linking to itunes etc.

I forgot about the fact so many shopping parks and cafes have free wi-fi! - inspirational!! I think that has sealed it - its a netbook with possiblility of getting an iphone later on..... although I will feel a little guilt due to the possible excessiveness. The need to do basic docs is more important right now - I will just have to get hyper on all the caffeineCoffee
