F/U on MH-so very long

So, I brought MH in for his surgery on Friday at noon, and got a chance to talk to the surgeon since I wasn't at his appointment. Here's a synopsis: He didn't slip a disk, it was worse-the disk actually came out of the "disk space" and was jammed in to the spinal cord.  The doctor was "shocked" that DH was walking!, urinating, able to get an erection..etc.  He told us that had this gone on for even just another day..something as simple as driving and going over a bump could've sent the disk farther in to the spinal cord and in to the "nerve sack" causing permanent paralyzation from the waist down.  So, needless to say I was freaked out (as was he obviously..).

So, they took him in to that little room where you get your IV started and wait for the DR to arrive, etc.  We were in there for a bit, he had to get some meds because he was supposed to be fasting but snuck some soda in there at some point, and they were worried he would get nauseated (sp?) from the anestishia (SP??) and throw up and it would go in his lungs since he was laying down..etc.  Sooo--the doctor said it was a pretty simple procedure that would take 30 minutes and involve him taking out part of the disk, putting the rest back in place and fraying some fibers on some hole so that it would generate re-growth!?  He went in to surgery at 12.  By 4 P.M. with no word, I was crying.  How could a 30 min procedure be taking FOUR hours?  Seems as though it was more complicated then he thought.  That so called "nerve sack" that the disk was pushing in to had begun to grow around the disk..(keep in mind he fell off our porch 3 weeks ago, went to one DR, was told he was fine, kept having severe pain and couldn't feel his legs at times, went to his DR, had an MRI, waited for results, then found out he needed emergency surgery, so totalling about 2.5 weeks..).  So, the doctor had to carefully try to manuveur this sack off from around the disk without puncturing it (which would cause the paralyzation).

He got out of the surgery at about 4:30 P.M. and was in ICU, they came out at 5:30 P.M. and told me I could go see him for a minute but that they needed him to stay in recovery longer then the standard hour.  When I went in there he was half awake and looking like a little baby, I was tearing up.  He looked at me and said, "MY WIFE!" which made me smile!  Then, as serious as he can he speaks out of the side of his mouth, "this sucks!".  He then said (which we keep laughing about hysterically..) "What have you been doing all day? hanging out? driving around? waving at people? having fun?"  I was like.."I've been here all day babe" This is so funny because I could honestly go missing for 24 hours and he probably wouldn't think a thing of it lol.

Anyways--he was released late Saturday night and I have been taking care of him since..I've been sleeping on the couch (hes on our daughters mattress on the living room floor since we can't be in bed together) so I can give him his meds every few hours, I have to help him bathe, use the bathroom, eat, anything really.  I'm exhausted and back at work everyday for a few hours but honestly, having something so serious happen to him just made me appreciate him even more, I have no idea what I would have done if something happened to him.  He keeps telling me if he had been paralyzed he would've asked me to divorce him! since it wouldn't be "fair to me".  I would never.  We took those vows, for better or for worse, and I meant them.

  • How scary!  I'll hug my DH a little closer tonight after reading this, that's for sure.  T&P headed to you and your DH.  I hope he has a speedy recovery and the surgery was a success.
