Plan B

Do you keep Plan B in the house just in case (for those not TTC)?

For those who have used it before, I know it is just a higher dose of BC pill right? Did it give you any sort of side effect? Does it last in your system for awhile (I know you need to take it within 72 hours).

TIA

Re: Plan B

  • From Mayoclinic.com:

"The active ingredients in morning-after pills are similar to those in birth control pills, except in higher doses. Some morning-after pills contain only one hormone, levonorgestrel (Plan B, Plan B One-Step), and others contain two, progestin and estrogen. Progestin prevents the sperm from reaching the egg and keeps a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus (implantation). Estrogen stops the ovaries from releasing eggs (ovulation) that can be fertilized by sperm.

The morning-after pill is designed to be taken within 72 hours of intercourse with a second dose taken 12 hours later. Plan B One-Step works with one dose. Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, dizziness, menstrual changes and headache. According to the manufacturer, the morning-after pill is more than 80 percent effective in preventing pregnancy after a single act of unprotected sex"

I have heard it is kinda pricey though so I don't think I would just have a supply handy.

  • I've taken it once, but don't keep it at my home. I could just run to the pharmacy if I needed to. It wasn't that expensive. About $30, cheaper than and baby and so worth my piece of mind.
    Vacation
  • It's usually free at planned parenthood. If it's not free at your local PP, it's definitely cheaper than the pharmacy. I had to take it a couple weeks ago and it was $50!!! PP was closed for Prez day. I've taken it once or maybe twice before and it never really affected me, as far as side effects. I've thought about keeping one in the bedside table, wouldn't really hurt, I think.
  • I took it once in college after a (hangs head in shame) one night stand. I didn't have any real side effects. I wouldn't bother having it in the house, now that I am married and another baby would just be a blessing for us. But in college during my party years I kept it in my dorm room in case of any drunken oopsies
  • Side effects for me were headache and nausea. Certainly better than an unplanned pregnancy.

It was $45. I don't stockpile it; pretty much every pharmacy carries it.

For anyone that is a little nervous about going to a pharmacy and asking, there is a pharmacy request card at the bottom of the Plan B site, on the right hand side.

    Hope is not a strategy.

    So's a condom.

what's your excuse for not using one religiously?? Ever heard of STDs?

  • This really doesn't answer your question, just throwing something in - my cousin got pregnant even after taking it, so just know that it's not foolproof, same as bc. : )

  • I've taken it twice but with its immediate availability at every single pharmacy near my house I don't see a need to keep it at home.  If I need it I just run out and get it.

This can happen. It isn't an abortive medication. If the egg is already implanted, you remain pregnant.

  • Plan B can encourage an ectopic pregnancy in your body, so use it carefully. What it does is make the uterus an unwelcoming place for the baby, so if the egg is fertilized already, it wont terminate it. However, if its not attatched to the wall of your uterus yet, the egg may settle wherever it is

In my case, it was my fallopian tube- which ruptured after going undetected before it was too late.
