Another question re: Myrtle Beach

We can get ridiculously cheap flights to Myrtle Beach, but neither H nor I have ever been there. I hear it has a reputation as a spring break/party place and we're more used to the speed of places like Hilton Head as far as beaches go.

What areas of Myrtle Beach would you recommend? We're looking at heading up there around May, FWIW.

ETA: We're not deadset on staying IN Myrtle Beach - I see there are some beach areas close by (ie Pawleys Island). We're not opposed to driving < 45 mins from Myrtle Beach. It's shame Charleston is nearly 2 hrs away.

The only thing I like in Myrtle is Broadway at the Beach. I don't care for the billboards and lights and congestion. I would stay south of Myrtle in Surfside/Garden City or even as far as Pawley's.  Charleston is only a very easy 1.5 hr drive down Hwy 17.

This place in North Myrtle is out of this world, especially for the price.

You will be close to barefoot landing (which is similar to broadway at the beach).  The stretch of beach that this hotel is on is also about as quite as it gets in the MB area.  It's in North Myrtle Beach which you will find has a better reputation than Myrtle Beach.

I don't like Myrtle Beach proper, but North Myrtle Beach, Muerrels Inlet, Surfside, and Garden City are all great areas.  DH's family has a condo in Garden City, so I really don't know much about hotels anymore.
