I bought a bar of solid shampoo at a craft fair before Christmas and just started using it. I was curious how something with no nasty chemicals made such great lather, so I emailed the maker. Her reply:
"Good question,
The solid shampoo bar is real soap just like our other bars but with
oils and butters that make the hair and scalp happy. There is no SLS is
any of our soaps or any other chemical surfactants that are used in
products to create lather.
Natural handmade soap gets its lather from the harder butters and oils in the soap, and coconut oil is the best lather producer that you can get in a bar of soap - so, no coconut, no bubbles. Other
things that can contribute to a nice lather are cocobutter, mango butter, palm oil and lard, which is great in soap (even though we don't use it, many soapers do and it makes a nice hard, creamy and lathery soap).
Thanks for asking, happy to see you're a label reader too."
I didn't buy it as a green product (I bought it because it smells fantastic and I wanted a solid shampoo to travel with), but how wonderful to find a locally made shampoo with excellent ingredients! They don't really have an online presence, but there's a little blurb at Hempen Stuff. The other major upside? A $5 bar of shampoo seems like it's going to last for months.
Re: I accidentally switched to SLS-free shampoo :P
She answered my email in minutes this morning, so if you're looking for a EF solid shampoo and can't find one, I'm sure she'd find a way to sell you some.
There are lots of options on Etsy, though. This one looks great! Very similar ingredients to what I've got.
Thanks! I found another one on Etsy that was more expensive for the same size. Maybe I'll try this out first and see how it goes.
