IYO: What are some bulb flowers that go well with hostas?
Right now I have a row of hostas in front of the house. There are five hostas total, each about two feet apart. I planted them from ones my mom had split two years ago, so they're still pretty small, but I know they will expand over the next few years.
Anywho, I'd like to add some bulb flowers in between, but am, quite frankly, not good at this stuff. But I'm trying, LOL.
I specifically would like flowers, not just foliage.
What bulb flowers do you like with hostas? And when do they bloom?
TIA!
Re: IYO: What are some bulb flowers that go well with hostas?
Most flowering bulbs (Tulips, Dutch Iris, Crocus, Daffodils, Lilies) need full to part sun in order to bloom. Hostas are shade loving plants, so you aren't going to find very many flowering bulbs that will work with them.
Other bulbs - Caladium and Arum - will work with hostas since they prefer shade. Caladium and Arum are grown primarily for their foliage.
You might want to consider planting perennials that will flower in shade (i.e. Bleeding Hearts, Columbine) or planting annuals (Impatiens, Wax Begonia).
I noticed you are in Kentucky and I have a book recommendation for you. Pick up a copy of Judy Lowe's TN & KY Gardener's Guide. I live in TN and this book is my Gardener's Bible. It has a great listing of all plants - bulbs, trees, shrubs, grasses, annuals, etc., that do well in TN and KY.
Anything that loves shade will do. See this previous post for ideas:

FYI, don't plant lily of the valley it will take over your garden. I tried planting some young hostas near an existing patch of lily of the valley (from the previous owners) and it killed them along with everything else.
