Grocery store has no green beans

I went to the grocery store today (Price Chopper in NY) and I didn't see loose green beans so I asked the produce guy - he said no I wasn't going crazy - they haven't had them for months.  He showed me a little prepackaged baggie of fresh green beans, but that was it.

I have gotten green beans from other local (large) grocery stores, although I guess they were in rough shape.

I assume this is from the same weather issues that is causing shortages of tomatoes?

Re: Grocery store has no green beans

  • Yeah it's probably the weather.  Forcing crops to grow out of season is difficult, and I'm sure the weather isn't helping.

  • Yes, that is the case.  We were told that tomatoes and green beans will all be in short supply.
  • Frozen green beans are pretty good.
  • I just read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and she devotes a lot of time to talking about how we've grown accustom to eating anything, anytime we want...that we don't even know or consider what's actually in season anymore. It made me stop and think about the grapes and tomatoes I'd just bought at the store and how she's right...it's a foreign concept to me now to go to the store and them not have something no matter what time of the year.

  • Green beans actually aren't in season this time of year, same with tomatoes.  So if you do get them/find them, they probably are not that great.

I work in a natural food store produce section, I get these questions all the time.

But there is still snow on the ground...

    I adored this book.
