Oh, people.

So after the earthquake hit Haiti, I defriended a bunch of people (mostly from elementary or high school) who had negative facebook statuses about how we should "help our own people" instead of donating to charity or sending aid. BTW, these same people are also opposed to any sort of social programs and knowing them,  they've never donated money or time to a charity. So bascially, they're completely full of sh*t.

Now one of them keeps trying to re-friend me and I keep hitting ignore. Um, get the message, dumb ass.

Re: Oh, people.

  • I get a giggle out of doing that to people.  I always wonder what they think on the other side. Like, oh em gee she must have deleted my by axident cuz we be cool.

  • Part of what annoyed me with those statuses was people saying "where was Haiti when Katrina happened". From what i have read online, Haiti was one of the first international countries who came to our aid. I wish people would educate themselves a little more before posting stuff like that. I really wanted to say something to some of them but i bit my tounge.

  • Yeah and also, I'm pretty sure the MASSIVE failure that was Katrina wasn't the current administration's fault. Where was the outrage WHEN IT HAPPENED? (warning, horribly sad: http://enrevanche.blogspot.com/2005/09/yeah-mama-somebodys-coming-to-get-you.html)

Oh and also there's this: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/16/AR2010021605745.html

I know. Hello, idiot, you know we were friends before what do you think happened?

  • That's a good idea, I should have done that. Obviously, they haven't a clue so they'll probably be too dense to realize you de-friended them intentionally.
  • One of my FB friends did that and someone REAMED her a new one! It was pretty epic. That status wasn't up very long!
  • Unfortunately in my case it's my MIL... Cannot defriend MILs on FB.

  • Ok, Cassie... you all can flame me...

I am one who feels we should help the folks here and I also do donate-I try.  I think I may be a hypocrite, but I have a problem when everyone just goes all gang busters-celebrities, etc... and it's all about-oh, did you see blah donating... and I talked with xyz on the phone...

I do give them kudos for doing it and it does help-don't get me wrong, but when I know the SKIDS are going to a school where the majority of the kids can't find breakfast in the morning or smell, etc cause of their environment, etc... it just gets me sad that the school asks for $ from each kid and then they cut funding for after school programs the kids are desperate for.  I would volunteer (again, def flame worthy here), but I get out of work too late.

I hope I'm not one that would post on FB about the above... I try to keep politics, etc out of my fb comments... and I do realize Haiti does need our help.

  • Hey Lorelai, I won't flame you. I actually agree kind of. There's a lot of great articles out there that talk about spreading out your donations. It's great that so many people have donated to Haiti since it's such a horrible situation, but maybe if you're donating $10 to Haiti, also donate $10 to your local food bank who needs help too or the local afterschool program. Those charities don't make the news unfortuantely.

I want to know what the hell Haiti has to do with Katrina in the first place.  Sorry, but I live in a city that Katrina affected and I would still never say anything that stupid.  People should get their heads out of their asses and read up on some news or keep their mouths shut.  I don't do politics because it all infuriates me so much but you will rarely, if ever, hear or see me discuss it because I don't have a leg to stand on, by choice.  But this type of thing just makes me crazy.  Yes we should help our own and I understand that but comparing something like Haiti and Katrina or any other disaster is just ignorant.
  • and I completely agree with you Karrey. the two situations were very, very different from one another. Just because they were both natural disasters does not mean they were in the same category as one another.

  • I think if you are giving (whether it is money or time) out of compassion and of your own personal choice it shouldn't matter if you do it at home or abroad. If giving to foreign countries isn't your thing then give locally but don't shoot someone down because they choose to give to other countries. Unfortunately there will never be a shortage of people both in the US and other countries who are in situations that they need help from others.

Edited...I don't mean for this to sound like a flame against anyone. I'm just trying to say that a person need to give where they feel a passion.
