Opinions please - TY cards for 30th b-day party gifts?

My DH just threw me a surprise 30th b-day party this past weekend!  A bunch of friends came, and most people brought gifts.  I am a big TY card person, so I already sent them out, thanking people for coming and for their gifts (jewelry, gift cards, etc.  FWIW, I did not open the gifts at the party in front of everyone - I waited until the next day).  After I sent the cards out, I realized that I haven't recieved TY cards from friends in the past if I've attended a b-day party for them and brought gifts (these are all 30th b-days that have been happening in my group of friends).  The gifts are not gag gifts either - again, gift cards, clothes, etc.  WDTY - TY cards not needed for b-day presents, or of course, as you recieved a gift?  Just curious...

  • In my opinion, thank you cards are never a bad thing.

    HTH!

    Amen sister!

  • I agree with the others.
  • Thanks!  I do totally agree as well.  However, if you didn't recieve one from a friend whose party you attended, and gave a nice gift, would you consider this to be rude?

I do believe that TY cards should almost always be written and sent, even for Christmas presents!  So yes, I think it is extremely rude that said friend didn't send you a TY card.

  • I'm curious as to why didn't you open the gifts in front of your guests?  I'm not slamming you, just curious.  I always like to see the reaction of the receiver when they open my gift.  Again, just curious.

And if you did not open the gifts in front of them, then they did not get a face to face thank you for their gift, so yes, you should send a thank you note.  :)

No reason, really.  I guess it's just normal in my group that we bring gifts, but enjoy the party and the guest of honor opens them on their own...

     Yes

I totally agree with this statement. I still don't get why poeple don't send out thank you cards. My Mom made me sit down as a young girl and write out thank you notes and it has stuck with me.

    You did good Smile

  • Its a really special thing, receiving a thank you note in the mail that was hand written by someone. Makes it sound like you really enjoy the fact that they attended and received a thoughtful gift. We dont have enough of that in todays day-in-age.
  • I wasn't really raised in a TY note kind of house -- weddings, showers, yes you sent TY cards, regular birthdays, Christmas, not so much.

That said, I now send a TY card for EVERY gift I receive, regardless of if the recipient would send me one or not.

I do consider it to be rude, but TYs are the norm with my group of friends.
