Loving home made laundry soap

So about a month ago I came across the recipe for homemade laundry detergent. I loved the idea but was skeptical. The recipe makes quite a large amount so I quartered it and just made a small batch. But after a month's trial run, I have to say I'm quite impressed! My son even had the stomach flu during this time and the detergent even got out (TMI alert!) nasty diarrhea stains from his clothes.

I ran out of my trial batch last night so I just made the whole batch, using old vinegar and Tide laundry soap bottles to store it in. It took maybe 10 minutes, should last me three months or so, and saves a ton of money.

I just thought I'd share my story in case anyone is considering it but hasn't made the leap yet :)

Re: Loving home made laundry soap

  • Thanks for posting.  I saw this recipe a few weeks ago, and I haven't tried it yet.  I might be doing that this week.
  • We have been using homemade laundry soap for about 6 months now, and we love it. It took a bit to find the right combo of ingredients for our water, but now it's easy to make a new batch. I am not using the liquid version though- I just start the washer on the warm cycle and add the soap, let it dissolve, then switch over to cold water and add clothes.

We use 1.5 parts grated soap to 1 part borax and 1 part washing soda. I made lavender flower bud sachets to toss in the dryer, and rescent them with lavender EO.

  • thanks for sharing!  i am looking into doing this.
