Hi ladies! I'm no green thumb but have some how kept a gardenia bush (from a funeral) alive for about 6 years through the Texas heat and random spurts of freezing weather. I have it planted in a large whiskey barrel. My question to you ladies...is it too late to prune it?
A couple of years ago my neighbor failed to water it while we were out of town in June so I pruned it back only to have it come back and looks so fresh. I'd love to start doing that every year.
Re: pruning question...
I don't know what the weather is like in Texas, but as they had snow in New Orleans a few weeks ago, its possible.
You want to prune in the winter when the plant is dormant. If you see any buds or shoots, and there is already new growth, it is too late.
I'm in VA and shear mine every year about this time. Most summer blooming shrubs can be pruned now. Spring blooming shrubs should be pruned/sheared immediately after blooming. Hydrangeas can be thinned this time of year (cut out old wood or crossing branches at the base).
Good Luck! I have Spring Fever too!!!
