I am in the (early) planning stages of my H's graduation party. (After 9 years, I think he's very deserving of one.) I'm contemplating whether or not to do a cake or would cupcakes be easier. It's going to be a rather casual affair, and I like that by doing cupcakes people can just help themselves rather than having to take the time to cut the cake. WDYT?

Re: Cupcakes v. Cake
I think cupcakes are easier as there is no cutting and its self serve, but I think a cake would be more appropriate for an adult grad party.
Here is my recipe for a red velvet cake and white party cake.
This is my major concern...hmmm...
Good for him!!
The reason I ask is because hands down cupcakes are just cute.
Look at these:
Or cake AND cupcakes:
Both of those are super cute...and I randomly picked up an eighth note cookie cutter the other day.
Hmmm...so much to think about.
I would say if it is a party with a start and finish have a cake. If it is a drop-in type party go with cupcakes, because that way people who 'drop in" early can have a cupcake and leave, and those who "drop in" late won't feel weird about having missed the cake cutting.
If you make your cupcakes more sophisticated like the ones above, and avoid the sprinkles and things like that, you should be able to avoid looking too juvenile.
Yep.
Well, that's where it gets a bit sticky...As I said, I am in the early planning stages, but I am thinking of doing more of an open house type type picnic thing, but knowing our friends and family, most will show up at the start time.
I'm leaning more towards a cake, but I love the convenience of a sophisticated, well done cupcake. We'll see how the rest of my ideas come together.
i had cupcakes at my wedding instead of a cake.
it was classy and people really loved it so i think it would work for an adult grad party
and then what kid doesnt like cupcakes?
here is my "cupcake cake"
So, they'll all show up the same time. Ok. But the question is, will they all leave at the same time? Does this mean you'd have to cut a cake early on in the party?
Good Point...I was originally leaning towards the cupcakes, then the cake, and here I am back tothe cupcakes. It's a good thing I have a little bit of time to make a decision. And I should probably check with H to see if he has a preference, too.
I think cupcakes used to have a stigma attached to them that they were for kids. However, I think cupcakes have become very popular recently and are starting to be used for more occasions other than kids parties. If you are doing a casual party with no specific end time, I see no issue in doing cupcakes.
My mind also went to cupcakes with music notes on them but I pictured them laying flat. You could make a flat sheet cake out of cupcakes.
