They plan on creating "Bicycle super-highways around the city", sounds like an interesting concept. You already have to pay a premium to drive your car into the heart of the city, or at least you had to, I don't know if they still do that. Anyway, I was watching a short video about the Olympics planning, and they said they wanted there to be no car travel at this games and are currently creating a train system.
"London has pledged to only build when necessary, making sure to use the world-class venues that currently exist. But where London does have to construct new venues, facilities, and infrastructure for the Olympic Park in the Lower Lea Valley, they are making sure that it benefits the city after the closing ceremony"
The birds nest in China has apparently only been used a hand full of times since the last games so this is definatly a great idea for host cities in the future to follow. I can't wait to see what else they have in store!
Re: London to get green in time for the Olympics
That is definitely good news! I would LOVE to see what a bicycle superhighway would be like...that just sounds so freaking cool!!
Dh and I were actually talking about a similar topic yesterday. DH mentioned how Athens is still millions of dollars in debt from all the actual facitilies they had to build, along with the infrastructure they had to have to support the Olympics-- that was 6 years ago now (right??). I suppose it's a shame, in a way that selecting cities with existing useable infrastructure will probably mean the end to smaller, more quaint host cities (Lake Placid, Squaw Valley, etc). But you also have to be realistic in its future use, right?
I also think the carbon footprint could be sizeably downsized if they would eliminate the "artestry" and "performance competitions" and just keep the actual SPORTS. Many fewer athletes, fewer venues, etc. It might be slighly unpopular, but at the same time, most everyone around the world has had to cut back in some way, reduce budgets and such. Why are the Olympics above that?
I think London is doing a lot of good things for the Olympics, but not everything has been good. There was a whole site of allotment gardens (small plots of land people rent to garden on) which were needed to make a path. This is sad as some land in the East end (former industry area) is actually too polluted to grow anything edible in. So, even home owners can't garden, making the allotments much more necessary in a city that big.To say nothing of biodiversity needed in a city environment.
